Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

amityevale, If no free warranty service available to you, then visit YOUTUBE for video clips on typical fixes (repairs) to internal power supply problems that can be done by owners that "know" how to solder parts on printed circuit boards with soldering pencil and solder!! Your search terms are: "lcd monitor disassembly" and then "lcd monitor repair". Watch as many video clips as you need to learn how to DIY repair (cheapest) your unit! If after you do YOUTUBE research, you feel this response has helped you to understand the problem your unit has, then return to fixya and do comment and rate response on fixya. Also do some reading in the fixya profiles of "budmrtn" and "12fixlouie" (me) for more information. By for now. 12fixlouie

Monitor starts, about three minutes no picture but

Hello,

It is the picture picture board on your monitor that is malfunctioning, since the power led or button is on, but the display screen goes blank after few seconds, it means the picture board of your monitor has developed fault.

The best thing for you to do now is to take the monitor to a local repairer within your vicinity or any service center to help with the replacement of the picture board because the fault is not something you can fix yourself, in order not to complicate issues.

Take care.

The monitor take a few minutes to start up, or the picture will flick off and on when it has started up. any ideas as to the cause of this?

I will assume that it does the same when you hook this monitor to another PC. First place to look inside will be the power supply section, look for caps with bulging top/seal, post back what you see so we can guide you further. See example of failed monitors due to bad components: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums

Samsung Sync Master 943bw monitor shuts down after a few minutes, behaves as though it is overheating, will only flash briefly if attempted to open immediately. starts again after standing for some...

Mine shut down during my normal working day. Same thing, turn it off and on again - screen flashes up briefly then flicks off again.
Called Samsung and they are replacing it with a refurbished screen under warranty.

Compaq 7550 screen issues

Your monitor is having thermal problems. Some part in the horizontal circuit is changing value as it warms up, and you're seeing the effect. It's possible to troubleshoot this kind of problem by using spray chiller to cool down parts and find the culprit, but labor and parts would probably mean you're better off just replacing it. New LCD's are quite cheap today, and you'll gain extra space on your desk if you get one.

Too late now but I hope you had it serviced while it was still on parts warranty. With a couple of exceptions, service on those is by major pcb replacement.
