I have a 1994 Renault Espace Turbo Diesel and I have a fault which is draining the battery overnight. The drain has been found but not the cause. Of the two leads that are attached to the negative battery terminal the smallest one is responisble for the drain which is 6 amps with the engine turned off. What I'd like to find out is what this smallest lead is for and could the cars main electrics still work if I disconected it??
The negative terminal is the earth
The larger cable is for the engine earth so the starter will work, the smaller one is the body earth, The car needs both for the electrics to work, If you disconnect the small cable the electrics may earth back through somthing else like the throttle cable and this will not stop the battery drain
