I have an Ibanez RG4EX1. The guitar will cut out on occasion. It does it mostly when I toggle the pick-up switch. Could it be a short? How would I go about fixing it?

The contacts in your switch are starting to go bad. You could try spraying it with a good quality contact cleaner or replace the switch. Here is a good site with lots of info:

Making a shimm for a guitar

depending on what you are shimming here are a few options. 1. home depot or lowes actually sell different sized shems according to there thickness just ask someone in lumber and they should be able to direct you to them. 2. your guitar picks come in all different thickness's so you can cut and trim them to the size you need to shim whatever your working on.

I have an Ibanez s470 and need a wiring diagram for 2humbuckers and 1 singlecoil with a 3 position swicht

What kind of switching options do you want? there are many ways to skin a cat but there are more ways than that to wire a guitar..
Visit the ibanez website for wiring diagrams if it is something simple you want. for more customised switching options, you should contact the pickup brand's customer care...for example, when i bought Dimarzios for my Ibanez,i emailed dimarzio and they replied within 24 hours with a pic of the correct wiring.

My s5470 ibanez has a lower output in the two out a phase positions. is this normal or should volume level be the same regardless of toggle position. Thank you Arnold

Volume levels change depending on the settings... Also the harmonic content changes so the "apparent" volume will seem different. Find somebody else with the same unit and compare them side by side. Also the type of strings MAY change the sound.

Ibanez AEL2012E If I leave the double A batteries in, they run down ... fast

The batteries are turned on by the guitar cable being plugged in. If they run down with the cable out, the contact of the "ring" part of the jack is shorting. The "ring" contact is shorted to the sleeve contact to turn on the battery. If you leave your guitar cable in for a day or two, the batteries will run down.

The switch may need cleaning. Use CRC226 available at Home Depot on the contacts.

ALSO see if any contacts MIGHT be touching the painted surface inside the body. The paint is conductive and can ground out the signal. Also check if one of the pot leads MIGHT be touching the paint.
