Try cleaning the heads first. The best way is to remove the top cover, then you can spray the head with Servisol Video 40. Also spray the audio/control heads, near the roller. Allow to dry before putting a tape in. Make certain all surfaces where the tape touches are clean. Don't remove the grease where the poles guide the tape to the head. You might find a cotton bud handy on some surfaces.

I have a Toshiba W727. I have all new recording tapes. Recently when I playback the tape, the picture bounces, even though the actual picture on the TV did not bounce. I have used a tape to clean the...

Open up the front of the VHS tape and look at the tape inside. It should be nice and smooth. If it is not the video machine has damaged the tape and it will bounce and make a mess of the video heads again. If the tape is crinkled at the bottom side the pinch roller on the VCR is worn and needs replacing. If there is no damage to the tape. Then all you need do is give the video heads and any part that touches the tape a good clean. To do this you unplug from the mains the power lead. Remove the top cover of the VCR and with some Servisol Video 40 Spray clean the heads etc. You can use a cotton bud to get into corners. Leave to dry for about 10 minutes. And re-asemble to try a tape.

You can find the Servisol on-line.
PS if you have never seen inside a VCR before, after you have taken the top off plug the power lead back in, you don't need any other connections and play a tape and watch where the tape touches. Take the tape out and pull the plug! Then clean!
Cleaning like this is much better than a tape.

Sound but no picture on the vcr

Do you have a picture with just normal playback of VCR? If the answer is no, then it sounds like the head might need cleaning. Use Servisol video 40 see image below:

Older TV works great alone including sound. Cable TV but no box. VCR connected with cables (red, white and yellow)to TV and has worked fine. Playing home recorded VCR tape picture OK but sound is low and...

Very likely the VCR audio head is dirty which will give you muffled or low sound on play. Remove the the top cover & using a piece of non-abrasive cleaning cloth & a head cleaning fluid gently rub the audio head to clean it. The audio stack sits to the right hand side of the deck, it is usually a siler block which will be placed in front of a black roller. The head is on the side of the stack facing toward you, give this area a wipe, try a fresh recording & then replay the new recording to see if the sound has improved.

Picture bounces up and down

All new VCR's are auto tracking however, you should be able to manually track it using your remote, or there are a few reasons that the auto track can fail, the tape may have worn or ragged edges which means that the control head cannot get a clean reading, the control head may itself need cleaning or the tape path requires adjustments, adjusting the guides really needs to be done by a technician as a reference tape is used, or that the heads are low and a good video signal cannot be obtained to gain a reference point....Phil

Your video head are dirty
Needs cleaning
> use denatured alcohol and shamos sticks
> clean tape guides also / they will have residue that will transfer to the video heads.
> be careful not to snag the heads.<<< very delicate
> professional should do the cleaning

Unable to record or playback VCR tapes

All you can do by yourself unlesss you are a tech. Is run a head cleaner tape through it. It sound like a dirty head to me. Here is something a lot of people do not know, The video head and the audio head in a VCR are two separate heads. thats why you can loose picture and not sound. Best taken apart and cleaned manually with rubbing alchol but not advisable if you are not experienced due to high voltage and if cleaning improperly you can damage the unit worse. Good Luck
