Some how warm ambient temps are finding their way in there and causing this ice up. I do know that samsung had built a few of the ge models which have evaporator coils in the refrig section. You should shut off the refrig completely and leave the freezer door closed, but open up the refrig door and let it defrost down to room temp. After trying this log how many days it takes to come back and if its in the same area.

My ge side-by-side refrigerator/freezer isn't cooling. It started on the refrigerator side and now both sides are losing cooling capability. There is ice build up on the lower back wall of the freezer....

Yes that is right. Turn the Refrigerator off/ unplug it. Remove the rear panel of the freezer and thaw out the coils with a fan or hair dryer.

The most common problem is with the defrost heater. Using an ohm meter check the heater for continuity but unplug the 2 wires (one from each side). This should be a glass encased heater. you can also very gently pull both ends of the heater and if it is bad it will come apart instead of feeling "springy". If you have only one heater your new replacement will probably be a 2 heater kit.

Ice build-up in lower freezer. We replaces the

warm between doors is normal. if hot then clean coils and if coils clean make sure condenser fan motor working thats the fan in the back compartment, however if warm thats good. did the evaporator coil freeze from top to btm is that why u replaced heater. if it was then could be heater,if the coil is only getting frost on half the coil, you could have a sealed system problem. is the evaporator motor working in the frz side if not, then that could be the problem.if coil is froze up it needs to be defrosted. did you defrost coil when you replaced heater,if not try defrosting coils and then wait about 12 hrs and see how it does.

Ice building up in freezer

Due to the frosting up, The glass defrost heater broke. Any good tech knows this happens. The defrost heater must be replaced. If this is a GE side by side. The new replacement heater has dual elements. The standard heater that was put in them, was not large enough to defrost the coils fully. Replace heater and you should be fixed up. I would also replace the thermostat while you are in the freezer section they are only like 15 bucks and this way you will have a new defrost circuit.

Side by side Maytag frig that is warm on top, not bottom

You can turn the thermostat off for now to let the ice thaw out, if a door was left open there might not be anything wrong, but if it freezes up again sounds like you might have a bad defrost heater or defrost limit. Hope this helps

Ice keeps building up on coils

We had the same problem with our GE frig, a Profile 24. When the tech came out, he explained that the energy efficient models have only 1 defrost heater, but the older units had 2 and the hook up and mounting positions were still there. As long as I directed him to install the 2nd heater he could do it. It turned out the original heater was just fine, so the replacement was installed in the 2nd heater space and it has worked fine for several years now. Before doing this on yours, I would verify that the defrost timer is working and the heater unit is ok.
