Question about Kenmore 22422 Top Load Washer

70 series Kenmore washer

Chris, I am having a problem with my washer. It runs through the wash cycle just fine but after final rinsing it starts and stops abruptly a few times and begins to fill with water again as it spins. When the timer finally comes to the end the clothes are on the bottom of the drum soaked. My money is on the timer. Help Thanks Brad

washer stopped in the middle of the wash cycle

I tried bypassing the lid switch with a piece of wire and I got the same problem. The timer does advance but all you hear is the pump running. Sometimes it will spin, sometimes not. It will fill for the rince cycle. If I try turning the timer by hand and wiggle it a little it will spin.

POWERUP, YOUR WASHER COULD BE THE LID SWITCH OR THE COLD WATER VALVE. AT THE END OF THE WASH CYCLE, THE MOTOR WILL SPIN OUT THE WATER, BUT ONLY IF THE LID SWITCH IS ACTUATED. IF THE SWITCH IS BAD, IT WILL NOT SPIN OUT THE WATER AND THE TIMER WILL NOT ADVANCE FROM THAT POINT.
IF THE WASHER SPINS, THE NEXT STEP IS TO FILL WITH WATER FOR THE RINSE CYCLE. MOST WASHERS USE COLD WATER FOR RINSES. IF THE COLD WATER VALVE IS RESTRICTED OR FAULTY, THE WASHER WON'T FILL. IF THE WASHER WON'T FILL, THE WATER LEVEL SWITCH WON'T ACTIVATE AND THE TIMER WON'T ADVANCE TO THE NEXT STEP.

THE WASHER DESIGN HAS A TRANSMISSION THAT HAS A NEUTRAL DRAIN. WHEN THE MOTOR GOES FROM AGITATE DIRECTION TO SPIN DIRECTION, THE TRANSMISSION SPIN GEAR IS IN NEUTRAL SO THE MOTOR CAN PUMP THE WATER OUT BEFORE SPINNING. THEN THE TIMER STOPS THE MOTOR. INTERNALLY, THE CENTRIFUGAL FORCE THROWS THE SPIN GEAR IN AND THE TIMER THEN TURNS

THE MOTOR BACK ON TO SPIN OUT THE CLOTHES.

ONE OF TWO THINGS IS HAPPENING, EITHER THE TIMER IS NOT STOPPING AFTER DRAINNING, OR THE SPIN GEAR IS NOT KICKING IN AFTER THE PAUSE. IT IS MOST LIKELY THE TRANSMISSION.

ONE OTHER THING TO CHECK IS THAT THE WASHER IS AGITATING DURING THE WASH CYCLE. IF THERE IS NO MOTION FROM THE TRANSMISSION DURING AGITATE OR SPIN, THE DRIVE COUPLING MAY BE BROKEN. IT IS A SMALL ROUND ITEM BETWEEN THE MOTOR AND THE TRANSMISSION. THERE ARE NOT ANY BELTS ON THIS UNIT

SO THE DRIVE COUPLING IS USED. YOU WILL FIND PIECES OF IT ON THE FLOOR IF IT HAS BROKEN.

Kenmore 70 series washer model 82871420 only runs on rinse cycle

Is the timer going through the wash time? Is the motor running but nothing happening? If the motor is running, then either it has not shifted into wash or the transmission is broken. An electrical coil shifts the transmission, it could be bad, or the trans it self is shot, time for a new washer.

Kenmore series 70 fills with water on rise cycle but stops halfway throught then starts agian and finishes is this normal

If this has always stopped during the rinse cycle, most likely it's the "cool down" part of the rinse cycle.

See the following Sears site for manuals. Enter your model number and you should be able to download the proper manual for your washer.

Won't complete cycle, stops at rinse. and can't get hot water.

Are you on well water? turn off the cold water to the washer and clean the screen filter out. do not leave filter out.
the machine probably has a cold only final rinse so it won't work properly.

Sounds like the timer has failed. It's a common problem.

Kenmore heavy duty 70 series won't cycle once it starts, it does the first cycle on any of the settings and then stops. If you forward it to final spin it completes the run.  any ideas

Check your exit hose spigot, it may be clogged. This is if your filter is all clean. There should be air for passage in the standpipe behind. Your hose should not fit airtight into the standpipe and neither too deep into it. Snaking out your standpipe would be good too. Is your inlet water in good pressure, see that filter screens on this is okay too.
