Perhaps, not the best solution. However, it should get you going. Hold the power button for 15 or more seconds. The machine should then power down. You should then be be able to reboot. If that does not work, remove the battery and the power cable. Reinsert and then boot the machine. Make sure that you let it scan the disks to fix any disk errors.

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

Im sure the boot sector is a mess. If the cd wont fix the boot sector you may have to copy all his personal files from dos and restore the computer to factory settings.

Dimension 5100 and windows xp pro SP3 clean install

I was able to dig this up.
Reference: http://4sysops.com/archives/tip-how-to-install-and-uninstall-a-program-in-safe-mode/

Run Windows in safe mode.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\
Create a registry key REG_SZ key and call it MSIService and value data and call it Service, which is the windows installer. This will give you permission to uninstall windows service Pack 3 from add/remove programs while in safe mode.

Suggest you start off with finding out if any ram module/s have been bumped loose inside the computer.
(Ram Module = Ram 'Stick')

Doesn't take much to bump these babies loose.
The ram module, or modules may look to be seated upon a cursory inspection, but the preferred method is to remove the ram module/s, and re-seat them.

This way you are assured they/it are down in the ram slot securely, and making a good connection.

Computer off, and unplugged from power, open the computer case. BEFORE you reach inside firmly touch the metal frame of the computer case. (Not shouting)

Your body carries Static electricity, and Static will fry out (Short Circuit) computer hardware components.
Touching the metal frame of the open computer case, (unplugged from power) will relieve your body of Static.

After you remove the ram module/s it would also be best at this time to clean the contact pins on the bottom of the ram module/s.

[Gold plated contact pins,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Generic_DDR_Memory_%28Xytram%29.jpg

The above photo, is to illustrate the gold plated contact pins on a typical ram memory module.
The ram module shown is a DDR Sdram ram module.
It has 184 contact pins. 92 on each side.

The ram memory modules used in your Dell are DDR2 Sdram. 240 contact pins. 120 on each side]

To remove the ram module/s:
I don't know if you've been inside a computer before. If you have please disregard the following.

When you open your computer you're going to see a small mass of wires, and the ram module/s will be a little difficult to get to.

I find it best to remove all cables to the computer, open the computer case, and lay the computer down on it's side, on a towel, on top of a table.
Much easier to access that ram memory.

This is Dell Support, and the main menu for the Service Manual, for your Dell Dimension 5150,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim5150/en/sm/index.htm

If you click on the sub-heading - Removing and Installing Parts, you'll find information on how to remove, and install your ram memory module/s.

On this page click on - Memory, at the top left.

If this doesn't work, or you need more information about the above, let me know in a Comment.

Dimension 5100 and windows xp pro SP3 clean install

Well if you have it installed on the computer and cant get past the Windows logo. Put the SP3 disk in and do a repair. Make sure you hit -R and not the repair button after clicking continue. Well the directions for a repair will be on the screen. That is my thoughts on what you should do. If you have already done this, then I'm not sure where you should head to next. Hope this helps!!

Dell dimension 5150 ethernet problem reloaded windows xp home from a windows xp entertainment os. apear fine but not receiving.

Okay, so it seems you installed Microsoft Windows XP Home on a what was Media Center Edition installation, and the ethernet is no longer worker.
Please refer to dell.com's support section, enter your model, and download drivers that you need.
To find drivers you need, Go to start --> control panel and then go to (under classic view) system --> the hardware section, open up device manager, and then look for ones with a yellow big question mark, and get those drivers from dell's website. Burn these drivers to a CD on another computer, or use a USB flash drive if that does work.
Good luck.

Need a reboot disk

Does it have a Microsoft sticker on the case giving you a serial number and product type: 2000, XP Home , XP Pro etc

If it has one then you need to find a buddy with a copy of that software and hope that it is compatible with the version you have on your system.

If not then it is off to the shop for a fresh copy

Reset Admin Password on used computer.

Ok, what I am going to do is show you how to bypass or (hack) a password protected windows xp computer. first, restart your computer>press F8 before it boots up, a menu will come up>select safe mode>restart in safe mode>the admin account comes up> click on it and click yes when the small menu comes up> the computer should boot to the desktop now>select start>control panel>select user accounts>select change account and follow the prompts to creating a new account (make sure that the administrator radio button is selected) put in your new password, etc> restart your computer. You should now have administrator privileges on that system. Let me know if you have any further problems. :-)

Dell Dimension 5150 probably software conflict

you will need to get hold of a full copy of XP off of a friend, as the copy that prob came with your pc will judt format your pc and start again. Dont worry about codes as your should find one at the side of your pc. you just need to make sure you get the right copy i.e. xp home or Pro.

When you have the disk put it into the pc then reboot, your PC should be set up to boot from CD if it is you will be asked to press any key to boot from CD, if not then let me know. you will now get a nice blue install screen up and a few options just carry on (dont select the console recovery as you theres an easyer way). now your PC will start looking for copys of XP installed on your pc, this is where your want to select restore XP (r button).

this will now copy over your old copy of XP but this will mean that you will not loss any programs or files.

Please be careful if your get up the options to format your PC then you will loss every thing. just reboot and do it all again. :)
Hope this helps. If you get stuck let me know,

you will now need to do a full
