Question about Computers & Internet
My lto ultrium 3 tape drive was working properly. Couple of days back it gave error with code 6 which was contrued as having poor cartridge but today it has started giving error 5 which is considered as hardware error and it is not going. i have done power cycling couple of times but the error remains. Can any remedy be suggested so that I can check it out. I am on the verge of completing the project but normal course of repair requires shipment of material which will take 2 weeks

a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

Hardware compression is more efficient and faster than software compression and under normal constancies you won't want to do that. Having said that if your drive allows it you would need to download and install a software utility made by your tape manufacturer. That what you will use to turn off that functionality; not a setting on the PC or the backup software. Bottom line is you will need to talk to IBM support. Probably not the answer you wanted to hear but I just went through this with HP a few months ago. They have a general purpose utility that turns off the hardware compression, does a drive analysis, a cheapo write current alignment, firmware update and a few other neat tricks.

Check that 'Prevent Media Removal' is disabled
Check the Support Ticket Device Analysis for indications of a stuck tape
Run the L&TT*** "LTO Stuck Tape Test"
Try a normal eject operation--Make sure that you allow up to 10 minutes for completion
Perform an Emergency Unload
Reset the drive to reset the drive firmware
Use Library and Tape Tools (L&TT) to Upgrade your Firmware
***Download LTT from www.hp.com/support/tapetools
