DVD Drive Broken: How to replace?

The DVD drive was open when I dropped my notebook. The rail that holds the DVD platter and slides the DVD plate was torqued a little bit. The DVD drive can't close now.

How do I remove the DVD drive so I can try to repair it?

Turn the Laptop over and there will be a clip or maybe a screw with a picture of some CD's next to it.

The website of the laptop maker will be able to show you, or post the make and model and we will try and help

I do not know how the 2 side slide rails go back together. i am trying to put the dvd player back into my laptop

For me to help you better I woudl like to know the make and model of the notebook that you are working on. Also if you can give the info on the old and new drive as well this will better help me see what needs to be done with your drive replacement.

Note with modern notebooks they will change the casing on the drive to maek it fit into smaller cases. So the replacement you got may not fit if it was not designed for this notebook.

Is the cooler broken? Iomega Hard Drive do not start. The icon does not appear to the desktop and hard drive does not switch off the electricity, when push the power button. Only power and HDD1 lights are...

your hard drive failed and it cannot be read. What happened was the sliding arm on the hard drive got off its track or scratched across the entire platter. It happens if you drop it or hard drives die anyway after about 50,000 hours of use.

If there is important information on it you can have a expert remove the platters and recover your data as its still written on those platters but I believe it will be expensive too.

Need to replace DVD+/-R/W/RAM/Label Flash drive. How do I do this?

Turn the computer off.
Disconnect the power-cord.
Remove the side-covers.

Disconnect the "data" and the "power" cables from the back of the drive.

Look for screws on both sides of the DVD drive.
If there are any, unscrew them, and the DVD drive will slide out the front of the front face-plate.

If there are no screws, remove the front face-plate from the computer.
Then, squeeze the "drive-rails" on the sides of the DVD drive, to "unlock" it, and gently pull the drive out.

Reverse the wholel process to install the new DVD-drive.

Broken DVD tray

Do you feel adventurous? If so, there should be a screw in the bottom of the computer that holds the drive in. With the power on, open the drive then turn off the power. Unplug the power supply and remove the battery. Remove all cables from the computer. With the computer upside down, place a CD on the bottom about where it would be inside the computer. Remove the most logical screw that is a little farther away from the open door than the edge of the disk. Gently pull on the open door to remove the drive. If the drive will not come out try another screw, etc. When you get the drive out, youcan see if you can fix it. If you cannot fix it, you may want to get a replacement drive. To replace the drive, insert the drive into the computer and replace the screw(s).

Will not boot up

I have only seen this once and I hope it fixes your problem. please open all the bottom plates of your laptop and see if you can get any loose parts out of the laptop. it may be shorting out the system. the only other thing it could be is your harddrive. but if it wasnt dropped or anything like you said. I dont think your platters in your harddrive would of just shattered. I hope this helps.

Trying to take my cd drive out and put in a new one but the old one will not slide out and I do not see any screw that need to be removed

If it is a normal PC, there should be 2 screws on either side of the drive that have to be removed before the drive can come out. Many times you have to remove both sides of the computer case to get to these.

This can vary however from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some put the drives on what are called rails where, if you release the rail it will simply slide out, other times only one side has screws.

If it is a mass manufactured PC (DELL, Gateway, HP, etc.) you should be able to find a manual on their site that would help.
