Hi there. I have a dvd/mpeg4/tv/fm/usb/game unit which I purchased recently while in China. There is no brand name visable. The problem is, the dvd unit will now not play dvd's. It had the problem every now and then, but I would just open the lid and reclose to get it going. There is now no action, whatever I do. The dvd does not spin when starting. It will state "no disc" Is it worth taking to a repairer? or does it sound to you like it should head for the rubbish? Please advise

The method for doing this is to use a piece of software such as WinAVI you will then be able to convert .avi files to an MPEG format. You will need to know which formats of MPEG your DVD player wil support such as MPEG, MPEG2, MPEG3, MPEG4.
Otherwise you should be able to purchase a new DVD player which will support multiple formats like, Dvix (.avi) WMV, etc, etc
I have just bought this unit and have been using the menu recently. The only ways i can see to do it would be to either, (as you say) plug it into a HDTV, or navigate the menu blind and hope for the best.
If you press SETUP on your remote once to get to the menu setup screen and then push the RIGHT navigation button 3 times this should take you to the system setup screen. Then push the DOWN navigation button 4 times and then push ENTER. At this point it asks you for a 4 digit password to reset the unit which is a factory preset, 5555, so type that in. This should then reset the DVD player to factory settings.
Hope it helps,
