Ranger 2980 very low modulation in am only.. voltages on 4558 chip look ok.. can it still be bad?

Try different mics or even the so call power mics that help you with you lack of modulation other than that I truly don't know what to say good radio by the way god bless I hope that was helpful.

Did you check the fuse circuit for voltage, use a testlite or something.
I posted part of headlamp wiring. You understand your dimmer switch is involved in the circuits.

Code b1318 2001 ford ranger edge 3.0. What would cause this code

my book says b1318 code is "low battery voltage at module" this is a self test the engine control computer (ECC) does to measure the power comming to it that runs it. it means voltage at module has been less than 11 volts , try unhooking battery cable for like an hour , also good time to clean your battery terminals (BOTH OF THEM) reconncet battery OBSERVE polarity Very important (red to+) this should reset fault rescan after driving a few miles if code persists then you;ll have to look farther for a bad /dirty power connection around battery and assoc items

It could be a couple issues in that section. Start by cleaning the contacts and switches to make sure it is not dirt. Also check to make sure the plug you are using is right for the jack- just to make sure everything is connecting as it should and nothing is inadvertantly getting shorted- such a 2 pole plug plugged into a 3 pole jack.

If those are all okay, the issue is in that boost channel section. Check to see if you are getting both power rails at the IC's, measure on a 4558 chip pin 4 to chassis should be -15 volts and pin 8 should be +15 volts to chassis. if you do not have this voltage, check the wiring, check the PC board for bad solder joints and check capacitors. Also check the physically larger resistors.

If you have the voltages, put an audio source on the input and set up a headphone with test leads, or better- an impedance matching transformer with test leads on the high impedance winding- put one to ground, with the other lead, move from IC to IC to locate the area to look at. You can get a data sheet for the 4558 here: It is a low noise version of the 1458 family of op-amps. Check each IC at the inputs and the output, once you locate the stage where inputs are clear and output is garbled, that IC may be the fault, or something in the vicinity- usually it will be the IC. You can get any configuration of the 4558 you need through Mouser or Digikey, and Digikey does ship worldwide

Once you get the new IC in, you should be groovin in no time.

probably the motor but chaeck this first G3 CHECK CIRCUIT 58 FOR BATTERY VOLTAGE
  • Unplug wire harness connector.
  • Set wiper switch on low.
  • Check Circuit 58 for battery voltage key on.

The s-meter goes down scale when I am modulating. What causes this? THIS IS ON A RCI 2980 RADIO

the reason i saked is that if you turn the power all the way up it tends to reverse modulate. this happens because the power is using all the transmit voltage for the final and the modulation circuit is trying to use as much as it can so the radio is most likly out of alignment and needs to be realigned. its not that hard if you have the service manual and the correct equipment. i have a factory authorized shop and we do alot of realignments due to the cb shops tweaking the 10 meter radios.

1. Check if vehicle has been jump started within past 2 weeks. If vehicle has been jump started, ABS is
okay. If vehicle has not been jump started, go to next step.
2. Using DVOM, measure voltage between positive and negative battery terminals. If voltage is 9-19 volts,
go to next step. If voltage is not 9-19 volts, diagnose charging system. See appropriate GENERATORS
3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect 25-pin ABS control module. Install EEC-IV 60-pin Breakout Box (014-
00322). Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between breakout box terminal No. 20 and ground. If voltage
is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Light Blue/Pink wire between
ABS control module and instrument panel fuse panel.
4. Turn ignition off. Measure voltage between breakout box terminal No. 25 and ground. If voltage is
greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Red wire between ABS
control module and power distribution box/engine compartment fuse box.
5. Measure voltage between breakout box terminal No. 9 and ground. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go
to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Yellow/Light Green wire between ABS control module
and power distribution box/engine compartment fuse box.
6. Measure resistance between breakout box terminal No. 8 and ground. Also, measure resistance between
breakout box terminal No. 24 and ground. If both resistance measurements are less than 5 ohms, replace
ABS control module and repeat self-test. If either resistance measurement is greater than 5 ohms, repair
suspect Black wire between ABS control module and ground distribution.
NOTE: DTC B1676 will set if vehicle has been jump started.

I have a crate Bass amp that is generating a distorted signal from the imput instrument and it will not clear up :what may be causing this condition on this unit?? Cc:Perplexed!!

Without hearing the distortion, it will be difficult to state with any confidence where in the amp the problem exists. That being said, the most common problem is with the preamp section. Many of these use 4558 chips as the pre-amp section. If hte chip is blown, the sound may still be heard, but it will be distorted. This is easily seen on a scope. The chips can be purchsed in bulk for les than $1, so the parts cost for the repair should be low.
