My GPS had been working ok...then..

Plugged it into car system and it would not come on. Green lite was lit on power cable-so it had juice.

Moved the unit inside-and attached to USB on computer (different cable-obviously). Unit does not power up here either.

I have the same problem. The reset button and the on/off button will not turn on my c550. I hooked it up to the USB and the screen doesn't "automatically" turn on. I went to the car to see if it works and it didn't light up either, however the light on the plug lit up though.

I just received it today too!!! Solution?? email me please. Most likely I will not come back to this site to read the response. Thanks in advance!

also, IF it is a bad USB cable, where can I pick up a new USB cable? Can I go to a local electronic store and use that or does it have to be a USB cable that Garmin makes??

I am on my 3rd unit in a year. Having the same problem on this one too. Unit does not get a charge from lighter cable or USB cable. Call Garmin and they will replace it.

You should be able to charge the unit from the computer by plugging in the USB cable that came with it. The unit should then turn on and show an icon of a GPS attached to a computer tower. It will charge while this occurs. If nothing happens when you do this, perhaps your USB cable is bad. Does the unit work normally otherwise?

Unit does not come on. I used a 5v charger from my cell phone and unit seems to charge. When I touch the screen I hear a click but nothing comes on the screen.

If you dont have the correct car cigarette adapter I'm not sure it will work,

Try using the a USB connector from GPS to computer to charge it.. this is a very slow charge that will take 2 hours to fully charge

Most USB connector plugs are the same as the ones you use to connect your camera to a computer

If there are no power points in your vehicle, you might have to purchase a battery-operated powerpack and plug the GPS into that via a USB/AC adapter.

TomTom won't turn on

Try holding the power button in for about 15 - 20 seconds to see if it comes on, do this whilst plugged into a computer or your car.

Do you have the Garmin approved charger / car charger?? You may have to send your GPS in for battery replacement or try this:
There are three ways to charge the internal battery in your automotive GPS unit.1
  1. Use the provided vehicle power cable that came with your GPS unit. The unit will charge while powered on and using the device as well as when the GPS unit is powered off and plugged into a running vehicle. About 3 hrs for a full charge. If the unit will not charge in the vehicle, check the fuse in the power cable for the unit and the power outlet in the vehicle.
  2. Use an AC power adaptor. Some units come with this power cable to plug the GPS unit into a wall outlet allowing the GPS unit to take a charge. For units that do not come with this cable, one can be purchased from Garmin's online store.
  3. For most units, the final way of charging the battery is to plug the GPS into a powered on computer with a USB cable2. This method of charging will be a trickle charge and it may take longer (like a full day) than the other two options, however it will still charge the battery. A USB cable is provided with a few GPS models. For those that don't come with this cable, one can either be ordered from the online store or you can use a standard USB to mini-USB cable that fits the unit and plugs into your computer.
1 - Please note that temperature can play an effect on the charging of a device. If the battery registers a temperature of 0°C and below or 45°C and above (32°F and 113°F respectively) then it will not charge. When connected to external power it will only be operating off of external power.

It take a day to charge the 260 WITH the correct cable for your computer as it will only trickle charge it.
Car charge does it in 2 - 3 hrs. If car is not charging it check the fuse in the end of the charger

I love this unit!

Resetting should not remove your maps. Have you purchased new maps since you bought the unit? Have you tried charging the unit via the computer, or just with the car charger. Sometimes charging on the computer can help.

Dos not come on.

Does it come on at all, or you get nothing when you press the button? How long are you trying to charge it on the computer? Try charging it for about 10 hours on the computer. Sometimes this can help.
