If you do not have a router that you can plug directly into the back of the Xbox 360 then yes you will need to purchase a wireless router to sync up with your wireless router that you already have downstairs. You didn't specify if your broadband router had wireless capabilities? Does it? If not then you will need to buy a wireless router to be able to hook up your Xbox 360.
Microsoft has their own personal wireless router that fits on the back of the Xbox 360 nicely. I would recommend you purchase it due to ease of installation and compatability.
first off you need an xbox live subscription to use xbox live. Also I am assuming you have a broadband connection. So the best way is to purchase a router and then hook up your computers and xbox to that router via ethernet cable. Here are two links that should help you: http://www.wikihow.com/Hook-Up-Xbox-360-Live
I can connect using mifi2200 and play as long as I want. However I do receive the message about NAT. Says mine is set to moderate. I have no idea how to change it to Open. I did have a regular usb modem and was connecting using it. My main problem is I cannot party up with friends on xbox live because my NAT is not OPEN. But for an answer just set up and internet connection sharing through your mifi and you will be able to connect to xbox live.
When you go to your network setting page, you arent supposed to manually type in the data. You are supposed to keep it on automatic. **Notice how on that page there are three sections.** Go to the bottom one and press "A". This should open a window where you will select your wireless network. Select yours and test your xbox live connection. If all goes through, than you may click on edit settings to find that all of the data is automatically set in for you.
If you run into any more issues, Send me a message and i'm sure I can help. (Im gettin pretty good at this.)
Hope these are helpful. The main thing that you want to do is make sure that you hookup the audio/video cables 3 male connectors into the an input on your TV and of course plug in the power cable for your xbox.
It should hook up but Xbox live is having a ton of issues basically xboxlive is down and wont be back up for a while. you can go to www.xboxlive.com and search under status then go to support this will let you know when you can connect back up to xbox live.
If you problem isnt with xboxlive then you will need to get a wireless router. Then go through the steps to set up a wireless network and then set your xbox to that wireless network.
