My carrier is tmobile; i was given a katana ii by sanyo on the sprint network; i want to get this unlocked so my son can use it and insert his sim card from tmobile. is this possible since it looks like sprint doesnt have a sim card in this phone?????

Contact Sprint and tell them you are going overseas and wish to use a local SIM card. They will provide you with the code and instructions. As for risks, there really aren't any to speak of. The only risk is that if you insert the unlock code 5 or more times incorrectly, the phone will be permanently locked to Sprint.
Most likely, you will have to purchase an unlock code from another website that is specific to your phone. There is no guarantee though that there is a code for it. You will also need a valid Sprint SIM Card. Please be aware though, if you do manage to unlock your phone, not all of the features may work. Features that are specific to the Embraq network will not work after the unlock. And you will not gain features specific to Sprint due to it not being an original Sprint phone. As long as you are ok with that then go for it. Look for the best price though. They vary from website to website.
