Data recovery from faulty hard drives is difficult and can be costly. There is no guarentee that you can recover data from a faulty hard drive. If the hard drive makes a clicking noise the the hard drive is dead. First thing to try, is to remove the damaged hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and then plug this adapter into a working computer's USB port. If this computer sees this hard drive as an USB mass storage device (external hard drive) and you can open the various folders and files, then I would backup your data. If the hard drive is not detected then the hard drive is dead and data cannot be retrieved with this method.
Retrieving data from damaged hard disk is possible. There are companies that can remove the disk platters from the damaged hard drive and with special equipment may be able to recover your data, but it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services. The reason for this high cost, they dismantle and remove the platters in the hard drive in a clean room environment and set up the platters up in jig/drive to retrieve/copy the data.
The preowned hard drive maybe faulty. To test this hard drive, connect this hard drive to an USB hard drive adapter then plug the USB hard drive adapter into the USB port of a working computer. If this computer can see the USB adapter and hard drive as an external storage device and you can view the folders and files on this hard drive the the hard drive is working, if not the the hard drive is faulty and you need a new hard drive.

There are two ways of retrieving data from a SCSI hard drive.
1. Connect the SCSI hard drive to a different SCSI connector on the same data cable, make sure this hard drive has a different SCSI ID from the first hard drive or other SCSI devices in your system. When you boot up your MAC you should see the second SCSI hard drive, You can then copy off your data or remove the redundant files and keep the old hard drive in your system as a 2nd hard drive.
2. Connect the old SCSI hard drive to a SCSI USB hard drive adapter. Then connect it to the USB port on the MAC and you should see this as an external hard drive.
This error is related to the hard drive.
It could be a faulty connection on the hard drive - try re-seating the hard drive.
The hard drive may be faulty - go into the BIOS and see if the BIOS detects the hard drive.
If the BIOS cannot detect the hard drive then the hard drive may be faulty ot the laptop's hard disk controller could be faulty.
To determine if the hard drive is faulty, remove the hard drive and connect it into an USB hard drive adapter and plug this adapter into a working compute's USB port. If this computer cannot see this hard drive as an external hard drive then this hard drive is faulty and needs to be replaced.
When the new hard drive is installed in the Compaq laptop, insert your Windows installation CD and install Windows, plus the Compaq's device drivers and your programs to get a working laptop again.
The problem is either the BIOS is not detecting the hard drive or the hard drive is faulty or the disk controller is faulty. Check the BIOS setting to see if it has detected the hard disk, and if there is a hard drive diags run it to test the hard drive. Try reseating the hard drive and if it doesn't work, remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter. Plug this adapter into a working computer's USB port and if this computer detects this as an external hard drive and you can view and open the various folders and files, then the hard drive is OK. If you haven't any files or folders in the hard drive, then format the hard drive from this computer to test this hard drive. If the hard drive is OK then the fault is probably the disk controller.
If the hard drive is faulty, then you need a new hard drive in your computer.
If the laptop cannot detect the hard drive. This can be caused by a faulty disk controller, or a faulty disk drive.
1st. Reseat the hard drive and see if the laptop boots up.
2nd. Go into the BIOS configuration and see if the BIOS detects the hard drive.
3rd. If the BIOS can't detect the hard disk, the remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a working computer's USB port. If this computer detects this drive as an external disk drive and you can see the contents of the hard drive, then the hard drive is OK and the fault is in the laptop.
4th. If the hard drive cannot be detected then the hard drive is faulty, you need to replace the faulty hard drive in your laptop and install Windows to get an operating laptop again.
