Pleeeeze this one is not even 2 years old and I have had problems with the fax since the beginning. I made a mistake and bought it from Office Max and I know that I got the extended coverage, but those geniuses say I didn't. I bought a dell computer and guess I should have bought all dell. My home had burned and had to be replaced so it was hectic. Especially after your answer does this mean that I have "bad" computer?! Please tell me it "Ain't" so. I've had other Lexmark products in years past and they lasted until I updated. I just haven't had any technical help using this. I consider it new. I'd like to learn to use this one. I don't have a manuel. I've had to have help getting settled and I think the manuel must have been thrown out with I had the Lexmark intalled. INEED HELP! Not really a computer geek just working toward being a geek.

Can fax to a toll free number but not to a local number

The easiest way to experiment with this problem is to plug in a phone in place of the fax.Take the list of numbers and try dialing them with the phone. Many local carriers now require for you do dial a "1" before the exchange, even if you are in the same area code.(I live in the D.C. area, and we have to dial "1" first).I believe adding a 1 to your local fax numbers will correct this issue. If not,try dialing another number at your location. If you can call one of your other numbers OK,but cannot dial to a local number even when dialing 1-area code-exchange-last four digits, this may be an issue with your long distance carrier.(Anytime you dial one before the other ten digits,it goes through along distance carrier, even on local calls).

I need to send 1 fax to several recepts

You can send a fax to up to 142 fax numbers, using any combination of dialing methods:
- One-touch Speed Dialing (up to 32 destinations)
Press the desired One-Touch Speed dial button(s)
- Coded Speed Dialing (up to 100 destinations)
Press [Coded Dial] > enter the 2 digit code (00-99) using the numeric buttons and be sure to press [Coded Dial] before each code
- Regular dialing and redialing (10 destinations)
Enter the number using the numeric buttons or [Redial/Pause] and be sure to press [Set] after each entry with the numeric keys

After all the numbers are listed, press [Start]. The machine will scan in the document (memory) and then begin sending it to the destinations in numerical order, starting with One-Touch, then Coded and finally the numbers dials with the numeric keys.

You can also create a group if you frequently send faxes to the same group of people by first saving them as One-Touch and then adding them to a new group.

When I try to send a fax I must dial 5 then number, do I have to put the area code if it's the same? and it says dialing then no answer. Does this mean it is actually trying to send the fax? (military)

It never hurts to use the area code in some places it is necessary.
No answer either means you are dialing a number that isn't a fax or the fax you are dialing is not set up to auto answer.

Try a fax you know is working.

I can't send faxes, the screen says telephone. It

You may need to dial a prefix prior to dialing the phone number you're trying to fax. It could be as simple as putting a number "1" prior to dialing the number.

Dialing with a code

Hello,

On most phone systems you can put a comma or wo after the phone number and before your dialing code. You may have to try dialing with 1 comma and then try adding more until you get the right number. Some fax machines have a button labeled "pause" that enters the delay for you. Just enter your number hit pause and then your code, then hit the send button.

I hope this helps

Need to send an overseas fax - how do I get the "+" sign before the fax no?

I don't know what you mean about a "+" sign. There is no sign necessary. For example: You can't do it on a regular telephone call either.
If you're having trouble figuring out the dialing codes, this link may help:

Hi zoaj,

More then likely you have the fax set up to USE A DIALING PREFIX.

Therefore it is automatically doing this, regardless of what you input.

Follow the proceedure below ( which comes directly from the users manual for your printer type ) to change this. Delete the " USE A DIALING PREFIX " information.

once that is done, it will no longer automatically add the prefix for you. :)

I have BOLDED the relevant information below that pertains to this.

Please take a moment to evaluate my solution. Your appropriate rating of my solution would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Office jet all in one printer 4215

If you are using speed dial to dial the fax number, the HP Officejet
might be dialing too fast or too soon. To solve this problem, try one
of the following:
Try manually dialing the fax number from the HP Officejet front
panel, or from an attached phone. For information, see send a
fax using monitor dialing
on page 43 or send a fax manually
from a telephone
on page 43.
Re-create the speed dial setting and insert some pauses. For
information, see create individual speed-dial entries on
page 56.
If your telephone line has a PBX system, make sure you are dialing
the number for an outside line before dialing the fax number.
The receiving fax machine might be having problems. To check this,
try calling the fax number from a telephone and listen for fax tones.
If you cannot hear fax tones, the receiving fax might not be turned
on or connected, or a voice mail service could be interfering with
the recipient’s phone line.
