I need more filters and can't seem to find them at any of the large home improvement stores. Does anyone know if they are still available? If not, does anyone know of another brand and model of filter that will work in the Honeywell HCM-560 unit?

You are right, all of the sources I know, including eBay, are out of stock. Can you get buy without the filter by usng filtered water from your fridge or buying distiller water by the gallon At the grocery store? Use some tape or glue to hold down any sensor that checks if the filter is in place.
you need filter model hwf100 for that unit. now you can try at any local hardware store or if your in canada you can try at canadian tire ifyou want. but if you want to order them offline you can go to www.appliancefactoryparts.com. type in your model number, clickon the picture scroll down alittle and the filters are the first thing to see. if you have any other questions please let me know.
I dont know why your humidifier is spitting water out.
But it sounds like you need to clean the unit and install a new filter. Once the filter becomes used, the humidifier won't work as well. Less water will be used because the clogged filter can't hold as much. Once you replace the filter, your water consumption should go back up and you should feel a difference in your home again.
Not happy either. I bought 3 Aprilaire 400 for my house (3 zones). I picked this style since I have attic installation and did not want to run drains. The first night I expected a major air quality improvement but no change in humidity. I have installed humidifiers before so I know the drastic improvement they make. So I watched for a season and still no humidity improvement. Absolutely nothing at all. Same exact observation as you all described. Only the bottom of the media was wet. I'm dissatisfied with Aprilaire 400. Do not buy!
Since I installed humidifiers before and understand them I am converting the Aprilaire 400 to work like a Aprilaire 600. I simply unwired the float sensors, removed the floats/lid and using a knife cut some of the plastic cups so the water would drain well. I also cut open the plastic exit port some too so it wont clog from dust globs. I obviously added drains. HUGE RESULTS. On the very first cycle on the humidity in that zone went from 25 to 48. I am watching carefully. -GK
