My hard rive went down last night. The power cable cam loose and it seems to have shorted something. The PC won't start with the drive installed - that is even if the power cable is attached the drive the system won't start.
The drive is fairly new but has 500Gb of downloads I really want to save.

hi, infact there is some problem with the power circuit of the hdd so this is not possible by diy and if data is so important then the expert will take out the media and recover it.because if u will connect it with any power supply it will cut off because of the short circuit
Make sure that something isn't loose on the motherboard like a memory card, a hard drive cable, or a cd cable. Check you video card connections to make sure there good. If you have another monitor to use, you might want to try that as well.
make sure that the hard drive is on one cable the ide and that the power is run to it, there is also a jumper setting on the back of the hard drive, you want this little jumper to be on the "master" setting. lastly resetting the bios to defaults will ensure that bios will detect the old hard drive. it will prompt you what key to press to enter bios. generally the key will be F2 F1 delete or TAB try pressing each of these before the computer beeps. in all reality there is much more to replacing a hard drive then plugging it in windows will need to be reinstalled as well as the drivers will be designed to run off the other computer
youre first hard drive is a primary master,,and the other one use the secondary master..remember same ide cable..and always check the jumper setting of youre two hard rives!?!?! because if not change the setting's youre pc is not boot or start window's
