Question about Panasonic PT-61LCX65 61" Rear Projection HDTV

Panasonic PT-61LCX65 61" Television Set Popped, Now Left with a Cicking Sound

We turned on our television this morning, it was only powered up for about three minutes when we heard a pop... slowly the picture dimmed then faded to black. We turned it off, unplugged it from the wall waited a minute then turned it back on. It makes it's usual whirring noise when powering up then there's only a clicking noise which seems to be coming from the lower left hand corner (near the power button). The clicking noise starts after the power up at the usual time when the picture would appear.

We've only had this set for about a year and a half and have not experienced any other issues with it.

This was exactly the problem. My fiance was even able to find a how-to video on YouTube which showed step by step how to safely remove and replace the lamp. Thanks, mfspencer! I appreciate it.

Your problem more than likely lies in your lamp. The whirring noise you hear is the ballast trying to fire up the bad lamp. The lamp part # for your set is TY-LA1000 and can be purchased online at vance baldwin. This is something you can easily replace yourself and your owners manual will give you instructions. Hope this helps

The Green CRT has shorted and will need replacement. You can verify the problem by removing the Green CRT drive board from the green CRT dont unplug the wires just slide the board off and let it hang suspended then try powering up the set if it stays on without shutting down then you will no its the green CRT for sure. The sound you heard came from one of the IC's under the heat sinks. Check the fuses on the left and right print, the print with the broken fuse must be replaced.

Without investigation it is impossible to know what failed. There are a number of boards in that set where there is fairly high current used. It is possible that some components have failed.

The Panasonic service rep would service the set by swapping out the failed modules. If the set is an older model the modules may no longer be available. You can take the set in for an estimate to see if the parts are available, and to see if the set is worth to service.

Picture faded to black, came back, faded again and had stayed black.

It seems your set has a loose conection in the high voltage circuits,in fact by now it should have many loose conections in different areas like the power supply and the horizontal deflection circuits,if you are familiar with tv service you can use the information as the first step to take, some of the loose conections are hard to see even for the trained technician but the one giving you this problem should not be hard to see,if you are not too familiar with tv service be safe and call for assistance from a servicer a least for an estimate.
