If you are getting a message that the hard drive is not being detected properly this is a sign that you my need to format the hard drive. If this does not fix the problem then you may need to replace the hard drive. The link below will take you through formating the hard drive.

Ps3 cannot start the correct hard drive was not found

Your HARD DRIVE (aka: Hard Disk), located on the left side of the unit, may be at fault. You will need to replace the HD.

When you replace your hard drive, you will need to have the latest firmware on a

usb stick. Download the firmware from the playstation official website onto a usb

stick. Once prompted by your system you will need to insert the usb stick into the

PS3. Good luck..

You will need 2.5" Sata Hard Drive.

My PS3 wont boot. Says "Correct hard drive not

I would suggest:
1) With PS3 off 2) Remove drive 3) Turn PS3 on 4) Let it complain about missing drive 5) Turn off PS3 6) Put drive back in 7) Turn on
If it still complains, try safe boot recovery mode again, choosing option 3, then again with option 4 -- If it still doesn't work, it's not looking good, bit hopefully those should sort it unless the drive really is kaput.

Playstation 3 does not start

Your hard drive has probably crashed.

Get any 500gb and below SATA drive that is 5,400 rpm.

Swap the drives, and follow the on screen instructions.

You'll be back in business in no time.

It sounds like your hard drive may be damaged. The Playstation uses a standard 2.5' hard drive and is user replaceable. Best Buy ,for example, sells these types of drives for $60-120 depending on the size of the drive (Number of GB) you want. Lots of guides online as to how to replace your hard drive, it's only 3 screws.
