Hey john..howza'bout a sony mini disc recorder MDS 40 which has defaulted to 'initialize'?

Service manual and owner's manual at http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MDS-JE330+M100+S40+41.html

Since "initialize" is not a minidisc function, most likely there is something wrong with the disc. Try another one.

This is sheer guesswork on my part.

Input/cut out

With the first question, if you are using an ip-bus to RCA adapter to connect your iPod to the CD changer port on the back of the radio, it won't be recognized until you turn on the AUX function on the radio. In the main function menu (usually gotten to when the radio is powered off), there is an option to turn on AUX1 or AUX2. Do this (consult owner's manual) and you should get your audio to play through.
With the 2nd question, the errors may have something to do with the file format on the discs. Not sure though.

Sony MiniDisc car stereo

It sounds like you have a newer portable minidisc player, and an older deck. There were several upgrades over the years for ATRAC files, and some of the newer recording formats are not compatible with older players.

Sound stops

HHHMMM lets see kinow what could cause that??? Oh I know have you checked the B+ connections going to the stanby power as well as your always on wires?? Could also be a defective speaker or a wire touching in the car becaiuse as the volume rises the more voltage going to the speakers so the more of an overload on the out-put IC. The output IC could also bee defective. My money would be on a bad output ic or a bad speaker or wireing.

Possible wiring problem?

I think you should add more details here, cause "volume problem" is a very vauge concept. it could mean too many things.

Changed settings(LP to SP)

If there is still no sound, you probably hooked up the unit's wires wrong. Try switching the wires coming off of the back of your head unit so that the wire that is supposed to be connected to the amp turn on in your factory harness isn't connected to the antenna lead or something like that. I don't know what the Pioneer wires look like, on my Sony there are two blue wires, one with a white stripe on it and one just plain blue. The wire with the white stripe on is the one that should be connected to the amp turn on in the factory harness.

Volume

Your MD player probably isn't LP capable. Attempting to play an LP recorded MiniDisc in a player that is only SP capable will produce no sound even though the display (time counter, track name) looks like everything is operating properly. Record the MD you were attempting to play in SP and you will get sound.
