Question about Western Digital Caviar SE WD1600AAJS 160 GB SATA Hard Drive

How do you re-initialise a drive, leaving data intact?

How do you re-initialize a drive without formatting? ( i.e just create the descriptor and leave data intact ). My two sata drives are displaying 'unallocated' state but any attempt to reinitialise them prompts me to partition the drives. They were perfectly healthy before I switched my bios to raid mode. After realising my mistake I switched back but drives seem to have lost their 'descriptors'. Previously both drives were ntfs formatted to their maximum partition size.

You're gonna have to reformat them to get rid of the raid information that Bios placed on them.

SOURCE: How do you re-initialise a drive, leaving data intact?

This is highly risky and i would not use it without fully backing up every bit of data on the drives, you most likely will lose the data if you try this!!!! Boot from a downloaded Gparted disc then resize one of the discs by a tiny amount, then apply the changes. This might reset it characteristics to something usuable. If the data is not accessible you could try using "pcinspector filerecovery", its a free download, then when all is rescued, format the drives.

The sata disc is not initialised

In Windows? - New drives have to be readied for use. Try Start > Run (aka Search in Win 7) type dskmgmt.msc. Look for your drive there. It should be without a drive letter. Right clicking will give you the options of initializing, creating disc partitions, assigning logical drives, and formatting. If this seems a little daunting. A wizard should load. If not there is refresh icon on the toolbar.

I formatted the c drive with an xp disk, but it is corrupt and will not allow me to reinstall xp pro, how do I get to the partition that has the factory OS so I can reinstall it

Try deleting the partition and then create a new partition on the unallocated space, then perform a clean install of win xp onto it if you want to fix corrupted partition issue. If you want to recover data from your previous partition, you have to use third party utilities. First select another partition from your hard drive, format it (if it mayn't contain important data), if it contains important data select leave the partition intact from the XP setup menu. After setup download a software names "Active file Recovery", use it to recover your previous c drive, and you are done, if you face xtra probs mail me to: gktareq2008@gmail.com.

I never did like norton stuff.

format the whole hard drive as one partition (not with norton)

use FDISK or similar

then to let the xp disk do its own thing

after xp is installed and running fine then run norton PM and resize to what you want for the C drive and let norton do its stuff.

you should now have C and D drives. if you want to split further use norton PM again and resize D and once again let norton do the business. you should now have C, D(but smaller) here I would use microsofts disk manager or norton toformat the last bit if thats what you did. and so on ad infinitum.

the 110 error means there is alread xp on the destination and it cannot go ahead usually if i was doing a clean install i would not have told it to leave the system intact but told it to go ahead and format (unless i was doing a repair install)

Boot using Recovery CD and run chkdsk /R C: to fix errors then reboot.

You may have to install a 2nd copy of XP which will trash the first copy but at least leave your data files intact.
