Windows xp updates

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone could help me with my windows xp update. Unfortunately, I bought a used Dell Optiplex Gx400 tower and for some reason my computer has a yellow shield with an ! indicating that I have 34 updates for windows xp but after I try to do my updates I receive an alert: Not able to update (see below). Hi Bhong38,
windows or Microsoft does not tell you what updates you should download first, so I'll help you with that. When you go to load windows update do not click on Express. Choose Custom. Download the security updates first.
Do not download,
Critical Update for Office XP on Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB885884),
Security Update for Windows Messenger (KB887472),
Security Update for Windows MediaWindows xp updates - 1.gif Player Plug-in (KB911564),
Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express for Windows XP (KB929123),
Save these for last unless windows express you need one before another update can be loaded. Some security updates may fail the first time around, don't worry about it. They'll probably download after windows restarts & you go back to windows update. It's not uncommon for the download proccess to take more than 1,2 or even 3 & more to get all updates. When windows wants you to restart do so. Do not be suprised that after downloading & installing some updates may also need another update. If you see .Net framwork please do not skip any & only download one at a time. Trying to do more than one will give you a headache. If you find one update that keeps failing to download, copy the name of that update & search windows for a possible fix, ex: windows XP update kb925902 failed. Copy that into the search windows of this MS link.

Good Luck! Take your time.
Have more questions, feel free to ask.

Since windows xp was made obsolete by Microsoft in an attempt to sell their new products. The updates are not suported any more and getting them from microsoft is an impossibility.
However there is a light at the end of the tunnel. If you download 360 TOTAL SECURITY free edition. After you to the initial full scan go to tool box and clik on patch up,thisscan will give you all the updates from internet explorer 5 through IE 8. It may take a couple of hours but it will do them for you> Have fun

Did you get any disc's with the pc when you purchased it,

  • go into security center and turn of automatic updates, reboot and turn it back on ,it will try to download them again ,next time your on the net.
  • if that does not work
  • turn off auto updates and reboot,if you can, go into restore, restore the pc back as far as it will allow you to,
  • if auto update is still off ,turn it back on
  • then next time your on the net it will update windows.
  • However it could be that you have a pirated copy of xp on the machine,so you are not able to install updates,in which case no point in having auto update on.
  • but usually a box comes up telling you,you may have a pirated copy .
good luck

For Windows XP drivers, the last supported through Dell, try one of the three listed here:
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/product/optiplex-sx280

Change the Operating System to "MS Windows XP" and the Category to "Video".

This discussion suggests that Windows Update will get you working drivers after a Windows 7 install:

If you can't find the right driver on the Dell site, try using a driver finder program. Automatically identifies all hardware devices and finds the required drivers.

Lost resolution windows vista upgrade on GX260

Hi all,

I tried numerous solutions for this issue and none of them worked except this one. I tested it with Vista Ultimate and don’t know if other Vista versions have the same drivers but here’s what worked for me:

1. Right click ‘Computer’ then left click ‘Properties’ to open up System window.
2. Click ‘Device Manager’
3. Click ‘+’ on ‘Display Adapters’ and you should see the drivers for your video. Right click and select ‘Update Driver Software...’
4. Select ‘Browse my computer for driver software’ and click ‘next’.
5. Click ‘Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer’
6. Untick ‘Show compatible hardware’
7. Select ‘Intel Corporation’ then select ‘Intel 82865G’. Click next.

This will install the drivers. No they are not the same drivers for the hardware but they work a treat!
