Question about Refrigerators

Open Question

My ice dispenser auger motor stopped working on my Kitchenaid KSCS25FTMS00 side by side refrigerator. How can I determine if it is the motor or something in the controls? I have checked the voltage to the motor across the br/wh and rd/wh wires and get only about 6v dc when I cycle the dispenser. I believe it should be 120v dc (per a schematic I found on line). I do get 120v ac across the gy and rd/wh wires when I cycle the dispenser.

You have an auger type of ice dispenser, so when you say you hear the motor is on, do you mean it is turning the auger? Take out the ice bin and close the door, push the dispense button and then open the door quickly to see if the auger is turning. If is is then dump your ice bin and let it sit out until it is completely defrosted and dry. Reinstall the ice bin and put the lever down. And see if that will clear the problem. The auger motor is not that strong and if you get any ice build up under the auger it will stop working. So defrosting and drying will normally clear it up.

Our ice maker makes ice, but the dispenser just grinds and clogs up with ice shavings.

Hello there,
When there is a problem with the motor that opens and closes the dispenser is when you will be experiencing such problem as having the ice maker making ice but not dispensing them
Most likely frozen up, known problems with this on kitchenaid. Try removing the auger motor and thawing it to see if it will then run.Your auger motor may be frozen, use a hair dryer on it and see if it starts turning again.
The best, if not easiest way to access the auger motor is pull it out. It's just four screws, two on each side of the fork assembly. The white plate and auger motor will come out together. There is a quick disconnect for the wires.there are boot kits to install over the motors to prevent this or just put it into a plastic zip lock bag with the shaft poking thru a hole in the front.
Hope this helped. All the best Elect_Comp

Ice maker makes ice but can't dispense ice

Please try this. Remove your Removable Ice Bucket Assembly which is where the Auger (corkscrew) is located. You should be able to see the Auger Motor Drive Fork which is located permanently inside the freezer compartment... opposite the end of the Removable Ice Bucket Assembly that you just took out. Close the freezer door and attempt to dispense ice... if you can hear the Auger Motor running as you attempt to dispense ice... then the Auger Motor is OK. Dump out all the ice that is in your Removable Ice Bucket Assembly and wash it out in your kitchen sink with warm water. Reach into your freezer and put your hand on the Auger Motor Drive Fork ... you should be able to rotate it CW or CCW...it is a little hard to turn but it will turn. Position the Auger Motor Fork to a 12:00 and 6:00 o'clock position. Now take your Removable Ice Bucket Assembly and position its Receiver Auger Fork to a 9:00 and 3:00 o'clock ....Re install the Removable Ice Bucket Assembly into the Auger Drive Fork. Close the freezer door and again attempt operate the ice dispenser... you should hear the Auger Motor again run as you press the ice dispenser. Note....at this same time the Ice Chute Door in the Freezer Door should spring open so that ice can fall out. Of course you have no ice in the Auger at this time...but it all this works then future production of ice will fall out. Note...Usually the Auger Motor never fails. but the whole thing can get jammed with ice and not dispense. Also, the the solenoid that operates the Ice Chute Door fails quite frequently. Last but not least... if nothing is happening... it is a control board type problem. Hopes this helps! Handy Henry

Ice maker will not dispense the ice

The auger motor and coupling in the rear may be frozen and won't turn.
Remove the ice bin.
Place a screwdriver or similar device in the forks of the auger and twist counterclockwise till it moves. The replace the ice bin and try again.
It will be difficult to move.
If that does not work. Turn off the fridge and use a hair dryer to hrat the auger gear and motor till it frees up.

Kitchenaid Ice Dispenser Auger not turning

There are a number of variations in their products. The reason is that they do different production lines for some of the same models. Many of the manufactures do this for a number of reasons.

The best way to service these products is to call their factory service. The service rep has all the necessary factory schematics, engineering information, and the resources to have the proper parts and replace them. When using the factory service, all their work is gauranteed. When you fix it yourself, you are on your own.

first make sure that there is not ice clogging the auger. check that connection to the auger motor is secure. If it appears to be fine you will need a volt meter for the following steps. If you are not comfortable using this equipment or do not want to buy one call a repairman. If you choose to continue remove the leads from the auger motor. Configure the meter to read ohms and place the leads across the motor connections. The meter should read some resistance if not the motor is either shorted or a lead has burned completely due to a short. If the motor is fine configure the meter to read volts. Look on the motor and determine if it is AC or DC and configure the meter for this. Connect the voltmeter leads to the motor feed wires and press the ice despense button. If no voltage is observed check the switch for continuity. Replace any faulty parts. If this sounds foreign to you call a repairman.
