CD DVD drive not working

I have an Asus U50A and for some reason my cd/dvd drive doesnt work. It will bring up a program to run it like media center and will show that it has read the cd start it and then nothing. It will freeze up. Does the same thing for dvds I have tried resetting the bios to factory default and that did nothing. Anyone know what I can do to fix this. It is driving me nuts. I have a warrenty on it but dont want to have to take it in to wait and get it fix especially if it is something that I can do. Thanks

I installed a cd, but now when I try to run the program, the cd starts spinning, and then stops. This is continually happening.

Try a different CD. If other CDs work, there is a smudge, fingerprint, or defect in the CD you are trying to use.
Clean the CD, and hold it up to the light and see if there are any pinholes. If there is light through a pinhole in the media, the disc is ruined.
If this happens with all CDs, try cleaning the laser lens GENTLY with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol.

If the CD itself is not the issue, and cleaning the lens doesn't work, you may need a new CD drive.

CD DVD drive not working

You can try a CD lens cleaner, see if its dust on the lens which is an issue. Failing that, I'd suggest you get it replaced under warranty. Start taking it apart and you warranty will be void.

CD drive doesnt recognize a dvd

Sorry to say, but a CD drive cannot read DVD's. You need a DVD reader. Thus, the CD drive will not recognize DVD media and tell you no valid disc is in the drive. I recommend buying a DVD RW (reader/writer), as they are inexpensive and enable you to burn DVDs as well as read them.

I have a Asus computer and my cd/dvd rw stop working. I can't watch dvd's or listen to any cd's I need to know what's up with my cd/dvd multi-recorder

First try a system restore back to the last date which you remember that it worked. If that doesnt help, you must find out what cd/dvd burning software is in your computer. It may have been corrupted. Oddly enough, you don't need drivers for the CD/DVD drives. They aren't even recognized unless you have a good non-microsoft burning program. Find out what burning software you have--download Belarc Advisor, a free program (Google it) which not only tells you everything in your computer, with model and serial numbers for hardware and all of your software (with their unique codes), but will also inform you if you are missing any needed Windows updates. Once you know what you have, if it came with the computer, you have to seek an upgrade at the computer manufacturer's website, as it may be a special program not related to the burning software purchased from the software manufacturer---go to their website for upgrades.

Dvd combo

Did you try axcessing the drive manually ??? Start > My computer > D:(you cd drive),, If it doesnt show up then the drive may be damamged. If it does you just need to associate the .ext with a program. Double click on the drive if a option box doesnt open up, you should see the audio files.. just right click on one and select properties. You should see the program the file is associated with. Just click change and select another program.
