Briggs and stratton engine on my lawn mower won't start.

I hit a rock and now it just backfires, I replaced the flywheel key which was not broken, now i heard there is a timing gear key that may be the problem? Is that a major repair? Could the problem be a blade key?

I will check the blade keyway, however the engine model number of my mower is 31P977 type 0635-e1
20 HP It has two blades. The left side blade is the one that hit the rock. Thank you very much for your help.

Remove the blade and check the keyway. If the key way has the shear pin still in it it may have been bent and not sheared off. That will cause it to be off timing. I would imagine the valves got bent from the sudden stop of the engine as well

Briggs 20 hp engine runs rich and backfires

Backfiring and running rich? It sounds more like the engine is running lean. Your problem sounds like a fuel problem rather than an ignition issue. However, did you by any chance strike a rock or something solid while mowing? The reason I ask is because you replaced the flywheel key. Another possibility is that the crankshaft has been bent and that could also cause the problem you are describing.

Hit rock and stopped mower. The blade isn't bent or loose but the mower will not start. It turns over seems to almost catch but not quite

If it hits somthing hard enough it will shear the flywheel key, which will knock the ignition timing out, to replace the key you will have to remove the flywheel, there are special pullers to aid removal of the flywheel, these can be purchased from your local Briggs dealer.

When mower is cranked, the enigine spits and sputters and balck smoke comes out from the side.

Did you hit something hard with your mower; like a stump or a rock? It sounds like your timing may be off. There is a key under the flywheel that is designed to break off if you hit something so that it doesn't bend the crank shaft on your mower. If that key breaks off, your mower will go out of timing and spit, sputter and backfire when you try to start it. Best of luck to you.

Hit a rock now won't start

You have sheared or partially sheared the flywheel key. It must be replaced in order to run.

Runs rough and kicks back when pull starting

The timing may be off. Has this mower ever hit anything while running. There is a small aluminum key that keeps the engine in time (flywheel to magneto) and it breaks if the mower blade hits an immovable object (rock, tree stump, meteorite etc.) The timing will be skewed and symptoms like yours will result. You can check the flywheel key by removing the cover on top of the mower and the starter/recoil unit. The key is in a slot on the top side of the crankshaft and fits a notch inside the flywheel. Look carefully. If it is sheared, the notch in the flywheel will NOT be lined up with the notch in the crankshaft and a new key will need to be installed after removing the broken one.

Engine won't start and backfires

Did you loosen the coil when you changed the key? Check the setting between the flywheel and the coil. !0,000ths, I think.

Backfires through the air cleaner

This usually means a bent or sheared key in the flywheel. Remove the shroud exposing the flywheel buy a 6" flywheel puller and remove the nut for the flywheel and attach the three jaw puller remove the flywheel and replace the flywheel key. The only other thing that causes this popping through the carb is a burnt intake valve this is a job for a lawn mower shop.
