What is the matter with these 'Expert' jerks posting the same stupid solution 'hard reset'. First off, the hard reset instructions are wrong: YOU CANNOT REMOVE THE BATTERY FOR THE 1000 SERIES Nuvi's!. Second, most of these people are telling you that they CAN'T get into the files through USB.

There is a way to get into a 'pre-boot' mode by holding the upper-left of the screen, then plugging into the USB. The PC then does recognize the device as a 'gps' device.
Problem though:
1. It doesn't stay in this mode long enough for WebUpdater to properly re-program the device.
2. One of Garmin's support recommendations was to delete 'GPUPDATE.GSD' from .system (actually they say 'Garmin' folder, but the 1000 series moves these files to .system) but what they fail to realize is that in pre-boot mode, the PC does not see this as a mass storage device.
3. So what we REALLY need is a utility that will let us manipulate the files in pre-boot mode, and the right files (READ: Firmware files) that we can download first then use the utility to install. There is such a utility AND firmware download for the 600 series, but not the 1000 series that I am aware of.

Same problem as OP here - tried hard reset but now doesn't get past the splash screen - doesn't even get to freeze up at the loading maps screen.

Try to do a reset on your unit , do this step Press and hold the power button of it for about 10-15 seconds and let the unit reboot and then check if its already working. But if still not you may need to do a software update onit and you can get the update from the site of Garmin.

I have attempted this several times. If the solution is present is the first 5 pages of google results, I have tried it. I have tried HR'ing with it plugged in, unplugged, and after draining the battery with no results.

Is the unit still detected by your computer? because if the unit is not even detected by the computer the problem is a hardware error already and needs repair. or worse some part replacement.

  • Chris M May 16, 2010

No. It was previously, but since it won't get past the splash screen, the computer won't pick it up. I figured I would have to send it in, but I wanted to make sure I had tried everything I could without voiding the warranty.

Yes better send it for repair to avoid further damage on the unit.

This did not work, as neither the computer, nor the webupdater recognized that the GPS unit was connected. Also, as a correction to the category automatically assigned, the GPS is a 1490T, not a 1300. It boots up to the splash screen where Garmin is displayed, and will not go any further. It will not hard reset as well. If I attempt to hard reset it, the screen flashes white and then comes up to the splash again.

Hello,

Thanks for using FixYa.

What you're experiencing right now is software corruption. You need to reload the operating system for your GPS receiver. You can do this by downloading the operating system software for your Nuvi from the Garmin website. After doing so, you need to save the downloaded software to your SD card. You can do this by using an SD card reader. After inserting the SD card back to the device, it should recognize that there is a system software ready for installation. Factory defaults will then be loaded to the device. You should be able to use your GPS receiver after that.

I hope this helps. Thanks and good day.

When I turn on my dell 5150 desktop it freezes at the dell splash screen

Hi,
If the screen freezes at the DELL logo then there might be an issue with the hard-drive of the system .
It might be an issue with the drive is not recognized by the system. Please contact the manufacturer if the system is under warranty.

Is it freezing at the i850 splash screen? If so, it is a board level defect. It can not be recovered. Your only option is to replace the phone or find another motherboard for it.

Freezes @ Mobo Splash Screen

you have i would say a corrupt bios, if it can't even select the splash screen, i'm assuming that you have tried to reset the cmos by means of the relevant jumpers, either JBAT1, CLRCMOS or CLRCLK or similair. If so and still nothing, when you built the system you may have stressed the board fitting the heatsink and fan or the memory causing the mobo bios chip to fault or it is simply a manufacturer fault and therefore up for exchange of faulty goods.
