Question about Western Digital 500GB My Book World Edition 500 GB Hard Drive

Open Question

My niece knocked my Western Digital 500GB hard drive to the floor when I was in the middle of transferring files on it to another hard drive using my laptop which runs vista. When it fell, the casing was knocked loose. I picked it up and tried to fix the casing as much as possible, and plugged it back into my computer. The computer makes a noise when it is plugged in and unplugged, but it does not show up when I got to my computer. I tried the same thing with my HP desktop computer, with the same results. It will show up in Disk management and Device manger, but not my computer. The computer went through the motions of installing drivers and stated that the drivers were installed successfully and ready to use, but I still cannot see it in my computer. When I go to device manager, the hard drive shows up, but not as "My Book (F)" as it previously did. Now it's just 'WD." Via google there were several suggestions, uninstalling the drive from the device manager and allowing it to re-install being one of them. I tried that, but it did not seem to help. http://tinypic.com/r/20h7q00/5 Another option was to change letter drive and path, which I am unable to do as shown in screen cap. http://tinypic.com/r/de7a12/5 Any suggestions as to what I can do? I am leery of 'intalizing' it, as I do not want to lose the 220 some odd GBs of files i have on the drive. Any suggestions would be appreciated! In case it's helpful, here are my system specs Compaq Presario CQ60 Notebook PC Intel(R) Pentium (R) Dual CPU T3400 @ 2.16GHz 2.17GHz 2.00 GBs RAM 32-bit Operating system

SOURCE: External hard drive not recognized

I recenctly bought a my book 500 gig drive and it is usb.
the firsttime I plugged the usb cable in it worksed. I had only a 40 gig ide harddrive and so I ordered an internal 500 wd hard drive to replace it. The internal 500 gig is a sata drive. first I cloned the 40 to the sata 500 and then copied the external 500 to the internal. I mover the cables to then make the internal 500 sata my boot drive. The computer would no longer show the external e\when i used the windows explorer. the device manager said it was there and working with no problem but windows did not see it.
After several experiments with diferent configurations I have concluded my motherboard wasauto configuring the external and internal 500 drives as drive 0. Since the usb was detected first and was notthe boot drive then windows assigned the internal drive as drive 0 and since the usb drive was drive 0 also it would not work. windows ignored it. my solution was to return the ide as the boot drive and plug the sata into a slave port. with that configuration both drive are seen and work normally. It took me several days to find this arrangement. so since my sata ports are auto configure and the external has a sata connection i will install an esata port adapter and try to hook it up as a slave sata drive so i cab\n use my internal 500 sata drive as my boot drive.
sorry this was so long but it is my solution to what others may be facing.

SOURCE: External hard drive not recognized

I have a WD3200 usb Hard drive. I am looking to partition it. The problem i encountered is when I go to the disk management, the drive shows up as disk one but below it , it says no media. its like the computer knows that there is an external storage device attatched but cannot access it. Also if I try to get into the disk from my computer, it says "insert disk"

Any suggestions?

SOURCE: My Computer does not show: Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500 GB external USB hard drive

Well i got a simple 320 gb external hard drive, and since the first month i had problems, i solve the recovery issue by opening the hard drive, and find it out, the inside was broken, and it got unplugged. so plugged it back and got my info. if your data its more important than 200dlls or less break the thing open, because if you claim the warranty they are not responsible for your information.

I cannot copy files FROM my Western Digital 500GB

Hi,

Check the file system of your hard drive. If your PC is recognizing it, check if its a FAT or NTFS. If it is NTFS then you have to reformat it using your Mac and choose FAT. Mac OS recognizes NTFS as a read only drive. If you plan using it with your PC and MAC you should format it using your mac and choose MS-DOS in disc Utility. You cannot format the drive using your PC Computer with a FAT file system because of the capacity. Only Mac can format it with a FAT file system.

Cannot transfer files that are greater than 4GB

The lack of free space iis on your internal HD not the external. Whenever transferring files from one drive to another, you are acturally making a copy of the file to be transferred and sending the copy to the new drive. If your internal HD is nearly full, you can try to Cut and Paste the files to the external, or clear up more space on your internal b/4 tryiing to move the bigger files. Best of luck.

Help!! Western digital 500gb external hard drive ticking noise

Yes. This is going to sound strange. Put the drive in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer. Next day, take it out, hook it up, and see if it is recognized.

If so, under My computer, right click on the drive - click Properties - then Tools, then Error Checking. Check box Automatically Fix File System Errors. Let it run. If everything shows up, be ready to transfer wnat you want off of it.

Freezing shrinks the metal parts . Microscopically, but often enough to get stuck parts free enough to get working.

I just went through this with a 750Gig Book. now i have reformatted the drive (after transferring all over to new drive) and the clicking is gone and all disk checks are fine and i wonder whether to trust this device ever again... Hate to just throw out a large drive.

File transfer over 4 gb

It's the limitation of the FAT32 file system format of the drive. The only solution is to reformat the drive as NTFS.
