Question about Fantom Drives 120 GB Hard Drive

2 Answers

FANTOM Titanium TFDU16072 160GB 7200 RPM External Hard Drive. I have the device since September 2006. About the last 3 -5 months the External Hard Drive was not every time connected to my notebook Toshiba Satellite. Sometimes yes, sometimes not. But now my computer completely doesn?t recognize the External HD. No info in device manager also. I?ve tried to find installation software for this device from manufacture, but I can?t. Maybe there is no such software. Thank you for your help in advance. Valery.

In regards to software for the drive with Windows XP and up you do not need software because the OS has native support for the external drives.

So here somethings to look at

First check the links below to make sure you just do not need to change the drive letter because another device took its drive letter.

How to change your drive letter in Windows Vista and Windows 7

How to change your drive letter in Windows XP

Next if the drive is not showing in Disk Management you might try connecting to another computer. I had trouble with mine on my XP computer all the time where the drive would not show up but when I connected it to a Vista system it would repair the drive and then my XP system would see my drive again.

If you still have trouble then most likely it is the USB controller that failed on the drive. In that case you can remove the drive and connect it directly to your computer. If you have a notebook you can purchase a new encloser for the drive and/or get an external USB hard drive kit.

Let me know if you have any more problems or questions.

External high-rpm backup drives: BEWARE of complete data loss

Please know that if you are depending on an external HD with high rpm (like 5600 or 7200 rpm) to back up your precious files with a USB connection, you may lose everything if you happen to drop the external drive from a height of 1". The thing will start to make wierd sounds. If you haven't backed up your data to conventional disks, unplug it immediately to minimize self-destruction. Professional data recovery for these drives is not guaranteed, and will cost at least $300, possibly $1500. A few makers guarantee shockproofing (like a drop from 8 feet) , but they are more costly. Don't rely on one of these as your real back-up, or doom may await your data. I personally like an online backup for a monthly fee--that way, if your house burns down along with your data and backups, you can recover everything. Mosy, for example, charges around $5/month for unlimited backup of data (not programs).

I am using Fantom Titanium 250GB External (TFDU25072B) Hard Drive i am not able to formate it i am using Windows XP Sp2 its giving me error " unable to formate " even i am not able to formate it...

The disk-drive inside the enclosure is problematic.
Open the enclosure, to get the model-number and serial-number from the label on the disk-drive.
Then, access Fantom's web-site, to check the warranty-status of the drive. If the warranty still is valid, they will replace it, at minimal cost to you.
If the warranty has expired, purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and transplant it into the enclosure, to "resuscitate" your device.

Drive is not switched on

check the input power switch on the rear of the unit...
It should be on 240V. Turn off the computer, then move the switch back and forth a couple of times... set to 240V. this assures the coorect input power to the external drive.

Secondly, move the USB port to another USB port on your computer. If it works fine, then it is a bad USB port.

Third, check the device driver in device manager on your software. try updating the driver... This solves a potential driver issue.

Good Luck,

Jeff

How does a external USB SATA drive dock

yes you can but whether that would make it work or not is a different story.

It depends if the hard drive is still working or not however it would test for certain whether it is working or not.
