Rv air conditioner problem

My RV air conditioner comes on but does not cool. I thought it just needed freon but my nephew said it had to have a leak or it would have freon in it. Is this true? I am thinking of just buying another with heat but then I read something about heat strips. Can you tell me about them?
Thank you

This is true...freon does not fade or get "used up" if freon is needed there HAS to b a leak.
heat strips are very expensive to use....option for the heat pump heating which will only use as much electricity as the a/c side.
heat strips= 220 v X 10kw= 22 amps compared to a compressor at ie= 10 amps.....typical draw for 18,000 btu

the coil probably needs cleaning but it sounds like you might have a freon leak.

Location of freon in carrier air conditioner camper

They are a closed system, meaning they shouldn't need re-charge unless a leak has occurred, and to Have an AC repair person come and evacuate, cut lines, add fitting and re-charge, could get pretty expensive. Most people find it smarter just to buy a new unit but get an estimate on repair and decide for yourself. Why do you think it needs freon, not cooling enough, or at all?

These are a closed system.(meaning that there is no fill valves for recharging) But a heating & cooling technician can solder them on and re-charge the system. Only problem there is to get an estimate up front, and compare it to buying a new roof unit which also comes with a new warranty, as well as keep in mind that the freon went somewhere, so there is an obvious leak that will need to be addressed as well. Most times it's wiser and cheaper in long run just to buy a new roof unit.
Are you sure that the compressor is kicking in? Did anyone remove cover on roof and check lines from compressor to see if any cooling is occurring?
These don't often leak, that's why I'm asking. Any idea how old the unit is?
Perhaps in fairly new, it's a warranty issue.

I would think your RV repairman could add refrigerant. Any heat and air company could do this for you. The unit does not have service valves in it and a port will need to be added. I have seen these units 30 years old and still holding the original charge. It is impossible to say how long it will last. If you need to add refrigerant more than once a year you have a serious leak that needs repaired.

Welcome to FixYa
Not enough cooling complaints are due to air flow issues, and not lack of “Freon.RV air conditioner- come from the factory- are hermetically sealed. The first basic area is the air filter. In summer, using the RV and air conditioner around the clock, the filter should be checked weekly and cleaned as needed. RV air conditioners use either a foam type filter or a fine mesh, both of which can be rinsed in water and reused.keep the filter(s) clean.Few years latter even the best filter will let enough dirt past to coat the evaporator coils, though, so they need to be cleaned. If the coils are not too dirty, and if the installation leaves enough room to access the coils.Once the cover is off, you can see the evaporator coil -Clean Coils too...

it should never have to be recharged unless there is a leak. so you should isolate the leak with dye injectable into the system w/ the freon and correct it, then fully recharge system.

Duo therm ac problem

Same problem. I have a 2005 on a Rockwood Roo. Worked fine in October 2009. Not working June 2010. Problem is not a freon leak, compressor went bad. I banged the compressor gently with rubber mallet then with a hammer but that did not work. The fan runs, the compressor runs but gets hot. Also no indication of freon moving through system as everything gets warm from the compressor outward.

RV Roof Airs, not so cool

After you check the pressure, get back with me. Age is always a factor with proformance. But really, unless it is leaking freon or has a defective part, the unit should work fine. Measure the temp drop across the coil. Meaning from the intake to the output. Get back with me.
