These devices require software to burn DVD's and CD's that is NOT just a driver...

A driver is not enough... typical software is NERO and other such as CD Creator, etc..

A DVD is quite different than talking to a USB memory stick or even a hard drive and you can;t just copy a file to it like you can a hard drive.

Typically using programs such as NERO, you copy to a list within NERO and when you tell it to burn the disc, it gathers all the pieces you have selected and goes about the operation...

Your purchase PROBABLY had a burning program included on one of the supplied discs...

CAUTION: Some of these "included" programs are "trial" versions that go away after a month unless you buy them... The don't tell you that either and after a month a nasty note informs you!

Have you tried another USB port on the computer ,also try uninstalling and reinstalling Nero apart from that it could be a fault with the laser lense on the drive itself and will have to be repaired or in this case time to buy another one.

well how can it be new? (new old stock you meant)
or new to you?
its at least 10 years old.. an old Desk top drive.

this is all there is now, they are deleting this section now.
Questions of the day.?
why run a 3year old dead,OS XP?
its dead, that means when you need drivers its going to be hard to impossible to find or will by found but will be full of VIRUS.
upgrade to w7. (buy a retail license for it and use it)
(ask how)
no system stated, just a DVD #
cant help much with that.
To make DVD and USB work right on XP it needs SP3.
service pack 3, but finding it can be hard.
no stores sell it (brick) no disks marked XP with SP3 now.

plug it in to a new machine, say w10 laptop or desktop
if it plugs and plays that means windows still supports it.
and if true may work with W7 too.
then try it on w7? learn where it can work and where not.
and save all this grief.

When I burn a DVD it will not play back properly... mostly pink pixels with some of the picture is OK for flashes. The sound is fine. I have a hp dvd 1170 and am using Verbatim DVD+R 16x speed. I tried...

most every burner has a verification after burn setting. Turn that on for a simple burn, use a high grade DVD and test.
If the verification fails, it is probabbly the laser is failing. You can purchase a cleaner cd but that rarely works.
