Speaker requirements are likely to be 8 ohm, most modern hi-fi speakers are. A few low-fi systems have used special high impedance speakers and the old hi-fi standard for valve amplifiers was 15 ohm and 3 ohm or lower has been used in televisions a lot.
4 ohm speakers are commonly used where a higher power output is desired at the cost of some quality of sound reproduction but depending on how the sound is listened to can soon overload some amplifiers primarily designed for 8 ohm as it will try and deliver more power into the lower impedance speakers and perhaps exceed the rating.
8 ohms is a safer choice. The lower the wattage rating of the speakers the more efficiently they tend to be able to reproduce sound at low volume levels so for background music in a small domestic environment the average power requirement will be in the order of half a watt so even with a high powered amplifier the volume would rarely be turned up above 1 - 2 on the typical scale of 10 and ten watt speakers would be more than adequate. It is unfortunate that it is almost impossible to obtain quality speakers rated at such an unfashionably low power rating.
With the stiffer cones of a higher power rated speakers the volume has to be turned higher before the speakers become efficient and listening at low levels can be difficult. In a domestic environment a 50 watt rating is perhaps the best compromise as if there are neighbours to consider a ten watt average power output will be sufficient even if the amplifier is capable of higher powers. Just don't turn the volume up more than necessary.
The greater the power rating the more power will be required for efficient reproduction. For electrical and mechanical safety of the speakers the rating should exceed the maximum output of the amplifier but listening at low levels with quality of sound can become virtually impossible.
The problem is in the audio output ic, or bad solder contacts, check to make sure there are no bare speaker wires showing, and if by chance you added additional speakers, then that is the problem and should be removed.
Hi, Possible problem for system shutting down is when the sound IC on the system is getting weak and can't power the system volume up to the max volume range,itshuts down. It's Protecting the system form getting damaged by always shutting down. You will need to replace the Sound IC with another one for i to power up the system to it maximum volume range.
The unit is in "protect" mode. Basically a problem is detected in the last output stage of the amplifier section and the unit shuts down to prevent further damage. I suspect that you connected too many speakers to the system. The impedence load was too low for the amp section to handle and one or more output transistors have failed. This should be a straightforward repair for any local repair shop. Figure on $20-$40 for parts plus the local labor rate for the repair. I am not familiar with your specific model, but these shelf units are all similar in design. I will try to locate the service manual for this one to get you more details.
I just had this exact problem. I'm using an ipod mini. I solved it by docking the ipod firmly at the angle the dock is at and have the ipod at an angle, not flat. I put the plastic and rubber adapter for the mini as instructed and also placed the rubber adapter for the nano upside down to keep the ipod propped at an angle. (Also can use something similar to keep ipod propped up at an angle) Took a while when I first used to figure out how the dock worked. The dock is a little weird how it is hinged to go from an angle to flat. Nothing in the instructions about this. By putting the ipod flat it would still have a connection to charge and play but the power shuts off every 10 minutes. I spent a whole night having it shut off every 10 minutes. This drives me crazy when systems have features like that which always seems to cause more problems (just my humble opinion) By having the ipod at an angle I'm currently just now having it run an hour and 20 minutes and counting with no shut offs,(fingers crossed) but so far so good. Saw on the internet that if the ipod is not connected firmly the system has an auto shut down. I think the ipod's weight propped at an angle keeps the connection firm. Also some said they want to see the ipod display, there you go!!!! This seems to be working so far for me, may be worth a try...I was about to return mine but I love the sound so I'm keeping mine now!!!! Works fine. Happy camper again.
