If you bought the house, did your hire a house inspector to check everything out? You can go back to him and have him double check his evaluation. I even got my inspector to pay for half of a repair when something broke right away after we moved in. If you are renting the place, ask the landlord to send a furnace repairman to do an annual inspection and cleaning on it. Just a few ideas for you to consider for peace of mind.

Vulcan CX Gas Furnace Model 902 outside installation. Pilot light extinguishes randomly. Lights again manually ok but flame seems weak. Its a natural gas system.

you can remove the pilot assembly and blow air thru it and then run a small piece of wire thru it
At the same time wipe the thermocouple end that you took out real good up and down on your jeans .That end has lead on it and that can become corroded so it does not get a good signal
clean the other end with a real fine sandpaper or a new not wet brillo pad

I need to remove gas valve from furnace dont know how to get started

Start by turning off the power to the furnace, now turn off the gas to the furnace. Locate a coupling closest to the gas valve and break it loose there. Now I find it easier to remove the entire gas train to do this next part, so locate the brackets that hold the gas train and you should find two sheet metal screws per bracket, remove the screws now carefully disconnect the wires that go to the gas valve.Pay attention to where they go, remove the thermocouple from the valve as well. Now you should be able to remove the gas train pilot tube and train up to the burners. isolate the gas valve and remove it unscrewing it from both sides. Make sure to use thread sealant when putting the new gas valve in and install in just the opposite of how you took it apart. Take your time pay attention to details this is a generic set up that I described here, yours may vary but treat it just the same. It is all about the details I am confident you can pull this off. Good luck

We have an old furnace. Model # em50743b Serial #55673 45k - 65k BTU Piloit stays lite. Very low flame when furnace kicks on...then humming noise begans and gets louder. Now will not come back on.

Hi,

That sounds like your gas valve went bad...

If it is very old you may have a very hard time finding a replacement for it...
depending on the configuration of the gas train you may be able to update to a newr valve but then maybe not...

You may have to get a new furnace...

I have a vulcan silhouette manual wall furnace that gets really hot and the grill and vents are starting to warp the thermostat doesnt seem to be working, should i still be using the heater...

YOU MUST HAVE THIS THING CHECKED OUT BY AN EXPERT. IT IS A FIRE HAZARD. Even if the thermostat was a closed circuit, the furnace would be working all of the time but it would not be overheating to the point of warping parts. You are either overfiring or your blower is not running all of the time. If it's a blower problem, clean out the dirt and dust and oil the motor. If the motor is not running, replace the fan control or the motor. If the furnace is overheating, your gas regulator might be bad allowing to much gas pressure to the furnace. Also, make sure that the burner orifice's are the correct size for the heater.

Noisy pilot light Vulcan Quasar 40

Simply clean out the jet tube with a fine wire, the sound you hear is the gas blowing by the irregular edges, and swirling and not mixing and producing sound waves, (Bit like a flute) So, you need to clean the tube right out, and smooth off the end again, & sorta "Countersink", Flame the end too, at the end.use a very fine needle file, and make it look like new, that will sort your problem out. Then adjust so you have a good gas flow. Also check out it isn't blocked too.

Have a 20yr + old vulcan gas heater and I cannot turn pilot off

Hi, If you are talking about the knob on a gas valve that you use to light the pilot and turn it off also, you have to turn the knob either ccw or cw to turn it off. To light the pilot is when you turn the knob to pilot and push down and hold it, light the pilot while you continue to push it down for a minute, and then slowly release it and pilot will stay lite. So, if this is the type you have just turn knob one way or the other and it will shut off. If you do not have this type set up, just turn off the gas to the furnace at the flex line as there should be a hand valve by code and by law that supplys gas to you're furnace. You can shut it off there and the pilot will also shut off.
Sincerely,
Shastalaker7
PS If you don't have either one of these shut off's, on the main gas valve it self, you should have a place marked pilot adjustment. Pop the small chrome cap and insert a very small screw driver to turn it cw to shut off pilot. This would be you're last choice.
