Open Question

Humming sound when plugged into a cannon video

I'm doing interviews with a cannon HD camcorder and am using a Sony lavalier mic model ECM-44B plugged directly into the camera with a good monster cable. There's a humming noise I can't get rid of. How do I eliminate this problem?

SOURCE: new noise

sounds like a ground issue to me. that sounds like either 60 cycle hum, or a loose or broken ground. You can probably do an ohmmeter check, first, with no power, and see if you have continuity. That's not unusual for mikes of the seniority of your equipment.

SOURCE: how to use Sony Electret Condenser Mic ECM-102

The closest manual I find is at http:// www.mutinymedia.co.uk/tie_clip_mic_files/ecm44b.pdf. Shows where the battery compartment is and gives specs and usage tips.

Hi i have a Sony hdr CX550 handycam camcorder

Most mics will work if the plug fits the socket on camera and it fits on the hot shoe okay, I never use Sony mics on my Sony camera, you end up paying for the name, not the item.

I have a bunch of ECM 44b microphones, I'd like to repair them.

It has been my experience that the wires going into the amplifier assembly is broken. What I do is cut the wire about 2 inched from the strain relief, remove the old wires from the amplifier and reterminate the amplifier. This fixes 90% of my problems. The other 10% is a broken wire at the microphone end of the cable. This cannot be fixed as the cabling has been injection molded.

MY JOB DEPENDS ON THIS!!! SONY DSR PD170 AUDIO PROBLEMS

Hi,

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

The Sony PD170 is not an everyday equipment, nonetheless, I will assume that on the Sony DSR PD170:
  • the Samson UHF M32 receiver is plugged to Audio 1;
  • boom mic is plugged to Audio 2; (or vice versa) and
  • Both Audio 1 & 2 are using the XLR connectors.
Assuming that your boom mic is a conventional dynamic, on the Audio Control Panel, pls set:
  • INPUT 1 -
  • MIC CH SELECT CH1&CH2
  • INPUT LEVEL MIC
  • +48 OFF
  • INPUT 2 -
  • INPUT LEVEL MIC
  • +48 OFF
This is of course assuming that both the boom mic and the output of the Samson UHF M32 receiver are set to MIC level. In some instances the Samson UHF M32 receiver requires a LINE setting. The only time the +48 is set to ON is when the mic that is used/plug in requires phantom power such as condenser types. If the mic or the Samson UHF M32 receiver requires power then this should be switched ON otherwise, there will be no audio coming in. Though most M32 uses a 9 volts battery.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

MY JOB DEPENDS ON THIS!!! SONY DSR PD 170 AUDIO PROBLEMS!

if you use original mic(boom mic), rec ch select (ch1.ch2 and ch1) if you choose ch1 it means only 1 channel you want to rec, ch1.ch2 means you select 1 in for ch1 and ch2.input level depend the volume of your input for original mic use mic if the sound around not loud, use mic att if the sound around to loud. +48v for mic original use on, if you use off mic don't work, for input 2 same with input 1.if the original mic don't work try to push the reset button. if don't work, i found that some cam, have bad contac inside the switches

MY JOB DEPENDS ON THIS! SONY DSR PD 170 AUDIO PROBLEMS

1- Does built-in mic work?
2- Connect direct mic and check sound instead of wireless mic and confirm camera audio circuit.
3- It is Sony professional camera and this should be repaired by Sony qualified technician as you stated that your job depends on it so don't take risk. Attempt of repair by unqualified person is not advised.
Hope this info will help you.
