Runs 30-45 mins then shuts off

I have a craftsman riding mower model #917.255450. it will run 30-45 mins then shut off. after 20 mins or so of setting it will start again as if there is a heat sensor malfunction. it will not spark until it cools down. is this a sensor problem and if so where is it so i can replace it?

Sounds like you need to replace the ignition coil,it may have leaked out it's coolant and the it will go to ground when it is hot.

Check the breather in the fuel cap, run it with the cap loose and see if it is any better.

Idles fine, shuts down when release brake.

It could be the brake switch bad, if this model came with one. When it is depressed it will start, but when it is released it may not be switching to stay running.

Mower shuts off after running for 20 mins. then you have to wait 10 mins to start again.

Sounds like you have something intermittent and its going to be hard to isolate. After it shuts off will the motor still turn if so see if its getting fire.

Mower shuts off while mowing grass

Check the switch that is located under your seat. If you are not on the mower while it is running the switch tells the mower to shut off. hope this helps

Craftsman riding mower shuts off after approx 20 mins of use.

ran into this problem twice this season, about drove me crazy - finally traced the problem to the anti-backfire solenoid [the little cylinder at the bottom of the carburetor that holds the float bowl on] - after running fine for 20 minutes or so [it varied], the coil would release the plunger and shut off the gas flow. as soon as you turned off the key and turned it back on, it would start back up - replace the solenoid and problem vanished

Craftsman riding lawnmower shuts off after 15 - 20 mins.

I have a Troy-Bilt push mower that does the same.

Try this - Run the mower until the point of quitting. Keep the hood up and be ready to remove the gas cap. As soon as you feel it start to stutter like it's going to quit, unscrew the gas cap and see if it comes back to life and doesn't quit.

If that works, then what is happening is that the gas in the carburetor bowl is getting depleted faster than the tank can provide it, possibly because of a clogged vent that's supposed to allow air back into the gas tank as gas is used.

You can try running with the gas cap not quite tight, to let some air seep in that way, but that's more prone to sloshing leaks. You could also try drilling a hole in the gas cap - about 3/16" is plenty, and stuffing a piece of natural sponge in to keep the gas in and dirt out. Synthetic sponge will deteriorate in gas.
