Hello Drew
looks like you may have to take this radio in for an alignment. It is to new to to much info on the web yet but sounds like the limiter in it s set to tight and may not be giving you full legal audio.

R/sig meter spikes on my uniden pro538w cb when keying mic

Does the radio put out and receive? And this could be as simple as your SWR switch isn't in the right position. But if your radio seems to work fine then I wouldn't worry to much about the meter it could be out of line I've seen that many times even on new radios.

I just bought a cobra 18 wx st 40-channel base cb radio and when i talk in the mic it comes out all distorted on the other end ive tryed three different mics do you have any answeres

Well, someone could have over modulated it. Some trashy techs will cut resistors and do nothing more than make it sound icky and bleed all over. You can turn the mic gain a quarter way to the left from where you had it and see how that performs. A mic gain turned up all the way is OK for farther transitions but a mic gain turned up all the way to people much closer will sequel and sound what I call "mashed out" ( distorted. ) If this does not help then take it to a licensed tech to inspect as the fix will be from inside the radio. Also make sure your SWR is 1-1:5 and no higher than 2. You can loose distance from a high SWR and burn up your radio. Good luck.

My grant has good mod on sideband but when i transmit on am i get a squeel like sound coming in with my voice but the squeel is louder then my voice. could it be a bad shield on my hand held astic power...

If you have talk back, that most likely why you have feed back. If its on a switch, turn it off. When it was put in, it was done too loud. You can also turn down the gain on the mic.

The power is on, however, when I use the mic and speak the "needle" doesn't move, I have tried different mics. Also, the sound coming from the radio is also very soft.

When you say the sound coming from the radio is very soft, are you talking about talk back? if so, you want that soft. If you are talking about reception then just get an external speaker.

If the radio is working, and transmitting ok, the meter is not important.

You may want to get an external meter to make sure SWR's are good.

If it is not transmitting at all, there could be a real problem and the radio needs a tech.

No audio Transmit

Try a hand mic with the set, there may be a short within the radio. If not your problem is with the audio amp in the radio itself.Repair should be about $15.00.

Have new dx959 doesnt get out very far talking 100yrds or so use rdking 56 mic mic works fine on old radio pc 78 and gets out fine also are 959 radios ok or junk has good reception

The DX959 has an output power setting knob. It's located next to the channel selector and is labeled RF Power. Turned counterclockwise will reduce output power. Turned clockwise will increase output power. Your switch is probably turned all the way counterclockwise resulting in low transmit volume.
Also, make sure the wiring for the RK59 is correct for the Galaxy. Even though it's a 4 pin plug, the pinouts may be different for the Uniden and Galaxy radios. Do a Google search for mic pinouts for your two radios to check.

Hisses/squeals when transmitting

Check the input voltage into the radio while in transmit. The voltage maybe dropping as you go into transmit which causes it to drop into receive. That in turn allows the voltage to come back up. With your finger still on the PTT it tries to transmit again, etc. This could cause a feedback squeal and other symptoms.

Mic hum

Yes, the wiring is different. Reverse the wires on pins 1 & 2, then reverse the wires on pins 3 & 4.

The wiring for you radio's mike is:

1- Audio
2-Ground (Shield)
3-Receive
4-Transmit

Depending on the vintage of your mike, the colors Uniden uses for these functions are white or yellow for audio, red is transmit & black is receive.
