Hi foxy37, so what you mean is that you have no display on your monitor? I can only ask you to check a few basic things & than I'll need you to post the model number for your e-machine so I can suggest other information.
1. First check that the monitor cable is securely connected at both ends (monitor & PC), & that the monitor's power cord is plugged in & is turned on.
2. The last time you recall running the PC did you or anyone else install any software? Was any one inside the PC? Did the PC run correctly? Now I'll need to know what model your e-machine is, so I can go here & check what you may need to do to check the PC.

Hello foxy37, thanks for the updated information. Concerning your monitor. You must turn on the monitor. The light on the monitor will turn green when first powered on & a few seconds after turning green if there is not a video single coming from the PC the light will change color to amber. (this is normal for all monitors). Still have your PC manual? Turn to pg. 2-2 & check the back of the power supply, there is a red slide switch. It should be set to read 115v.

When you press the power button on the e-machine W2040, watch the front of the PC. See pg. 1-1. You should see the power button turn green (it's not very bright). You should also see a smaller (red) flashing led. This is your hard drive is working/running. Your monitor's light should go from amber to green. Can you borrow a monitor from a friend just to see if your monitor is bad? If you have checked everything from my last post & you also tried another monitor than it is possible your video adapter is bad. If you have never been inside a computer before than I strongly suggest you take your PC to a service center. I can not talk you through trouble shooting the internales with out you hurting yourself or the PC.

Louder whirring noise when turning on computer

trumpjd,
Usually on startup the fans work a little harder then slow down. On newer computers they still have noticable fan noise. Most of what ou hear while the machine is running after start up is the power supply fan. When it starts to go bad you'll hear it all the time.

Emachine power supply

Unfortunately, E-Machines are well known for their power supply problems. I have a room full of them.

Let me guess, you can hear something rattling around in the power supply, right?

When this happens, a component blows cleanly off of the board inside, and sends a voltage spike to the mainboard.

With any luck, the hard drive logic board wasn't damage, and you can recover your data with another PC.
