If there is a cord plug under the sink for this, then unplug it,otherwise turn off the breaker or remove the fuse for this unit. (double check twice). Once this is done you can use a narrow wooden stick and twirl it inside the cavity to see if a spoon found its way in there. You may also need to remove the discharge connector to see if something jamb in that

Waste king 1001 disposer is jammed and won't rotate from inside with a broom handle. Do I need to take it apart to free it up?

Should be a place on the bottom of the unit to insert a hex or allen key to turn it to break it free... if its jammed. Make sure power is off/ disconnected prior to performing this task.

Garbage Disposal Ace 2000 model 47982.... The water won't drain out of it and the sink is backed up and hasn't gone down for a whole day now. It seems like the blades are turning. I've been...

Hi David,

Are the blades actually turning or is just the motor running?
First, turn off the power to the disposal at the circuit breaker. Do not put your hand in until you do this.

If you hear the motor running, but not the blades, then the blades are jammed. On most disposers you can put an allen wrench in an opening under the unit and move the blades. If the blades move freely, then your drain line is probably plugged.
If the motor runs, but the blades don't and they will move freely by hand, then the disposal needs repair.
If the blades are jammed with food, you can clear the jam with your hand and the allen wrench trick from underneath.
Once the disposer is freed up, run cold water down the drain for a few minutes to harden any grease build up inside. Then running the disposer should get rid of the hardened grease.
By the way, most disposers have a reset button on the bottom of the motor should your disposer jam and turn off or trip your breaker.

Orange peels, etc. will not harm your disposer. A good way to keep it clear is to put egg shells down it periodically. The shell action will scrape junk off the inside of the disposer.

You can also keep the disposer clean of grease buildup by pouring some baking soda in the disposer followed by a mix of hot water and vinegar.

Hope this helps. If it does, I'd appreciate a 4 thumbs up. Thanks,

Handie Andie

My disposal just humms and I tried to turn the bottom with an allen wrench but it will not spin...I tried to turn the allen wrench in both clockwise and counterclockwise direction.

Put wooden broomstick in sink opening.
Wedge broom against edge of opening and see if you can unstick the disposal.
You can use a vacuum cleaner hose to help clean out blockage.

When I turn on the garbage disposal, it hums.

It's probably jammed. There should be a hex key stored under the sink with the disposal. It's a 5 or 6 inch long steel bar with a hexagonal shape when viewed from the end. This is often called an "Allen wrench" (that's a brand name). The hex key that came with your disposal would be in a Z shape with the two bends somewhat less sharp than 90 degrees. If you don't have that wrench, you can probably borrow one from your neighbor, or just buy one at the hardware store. Anyway, you insert the key from underneath the disposal into the very center. Turn the it back and forth to make the disposal turn a bit. Remove the key. Then try the switch again. If you have a very hard object (like a spoon) in the disposal it will quickly jam again. If so, you will have to remove the object from above. Good luck.

Used reset button, the motor runs but the blades are not turning?

sound's like you have a problem with your drain pipe's. it is not normal for water to come back up.check the allen key bolt, located on the bottom of unit .insert allen wrench /key,and turn in a clock wise&counter clockwise motion to see if disposal is jammed.you also might consider some drain opener before it get's worse

Kitchenaid kadette 250 1/2 hp won't turn on.

Try turning off the circuit breaker and turning it back on, pushing the reset button firmly on the bottom of the disposer, and checking to make sure it's not jammed and rotates freely. If it is jammed you can put a disposer wrench or allen wrench in the hole in the bottom and rotate the shaft to free it. There might already be a wrench under your sink for that.

Water doesnt flow thru and the disposal hums when u turn it on but doesnt run

Aparantly your dispoal has not run for several days or a week or so. In thedisposal are 100 little holes that the groud-up food must pass through and the water as well. If the disposal does not work(Turn) then food particles begin to block all the holes and no water moves. You need to get the dispoal fixed ( or maybe it is jammed) still need to fix it, or use the wrenchette that comes with it (or a 1/4" allen wrench) in the bottom center hole to turn it by hand; this will free the foor particles and allow water to move. You can also plunge the water; this pushes the food through the holes and solves the problem. But, it starts over again until you have the disposal working on its own.

Humms but blades don't move. the blades move freely. the reset button did not fix it. thank you.

Try placing the allen wrench into the socket on the underside of the disposer and working it back and forth, then trying it electrically. The blades can appear to be free, even with a jam. The moving of the inner workings with the allen wrench should free it all up. Flush the disposer with a potful of ice and water when it turns freely.
