Question about Plumbing

Dripping overflow from toilet cistern.

Hello, My toilet cistern overflow is dripping - the water in the cistern fills up just above the overflow level. I think probably the valve needs replacing as I have just read about this. It is a very old cistern. Is there a diagram so I can be really clear what to do as I do not want to use a plumber due to their high charges. Thank you, Carol.

There is an adjustment screw ontop of the fill valve assembly. Tighten this down and the water level should stop at a lower level unless the internal mechanism has crusted up.

Why is gas dripping/runnng out bottom overflow line of carb?

Could be one of the carb floats is stuck or the rollover caused it to come off its mounting position. As fuel enters the carb, the float rises with the fuel level until it reaches a position that shuts off any more fuel entering the float chamber and prevents an overflow. Fuel level drops, float drops and fuel flows again. Basically like the cistern in a toilet.

Toilet has dripping sound - NOT the flapper

As long as the chain on the flapper is slack after it flushes it will seal.
then put some weight on the flapper just to experiment to ensure a tight seal.
if you can see the drain elbow under the toilet in the basement with the ceiling exposing the drain that would be the guaranteed way to know for sure. I am assuming you have done that.
Last but not least the small line on the fill valve that goes into the overflow could be weeping from the fill valve as this is the bowl wash.. So it will drip or sometimes it runs a bit . If this helps

I can hear a dripping of water but the washer is fine. The water tap is turned down low, I'm a female and not familiar with the makings of a toilet cistern how does the centre flushing mechanism come out....

Anytime that you have water dripping between flush cycles, it is caused by water leaking through the flush valve. Without being able to look at it I would recommend placing the entire flush valve assembly (flush ball/plunger and the valve seat (washer). The part is not expensive, although the labor may be. You could replace the flush ball or plunger (whichever type it is) yourself and that may correct the problem.

Toilet system will not completely stop dripping, resulting in constant drip from overflow. How do I stop it?

Is the drip comming from the small fill tube going into the overflow? If so you may need to raise it a little. The nost common leak is from the flapper or seal. On rare occasioms the flush valve itself has a defect that will cause it to leak. Take a close look at the problem and Im sure you will find it. I hope this helps.

Water drips into overflow valve after flushing

The purpose of the "Overflow" tube is to fill the toilet bowl. It should drip for a while. If it is continuously dripping there could be dirt or deposits on the ball **** valve. Shut off the water and dissasemble to see if there is deposits or perhaps a torn diaphragm.

Modern toilet cisterns without overflowprovision

Most modern flush units have built in overflow protection, if the water level rises above the flush device then water runs into the toilet itself rather than out of the overflow pipe to the outside as in older toilets.

You could always check by taking the top off the cistern and push down the float device with your finger to see what happens!

hope this helps
