Question about Kenmore Washing Machines

3 Answers

Kenmore Front-Loading Washer Model HE3t only operates through 2-3 wash cycles before error code F-02 illuminates & machine stops to operate. Usually occurs near end of wash cycle & just prior to when normally the final rinse cycle would begin. Unplugged unit for 30 minutes, removed clothing from unit, removed residual water using shop-vac, cleaned the pre-pump coin trap/filter, plugged unit back in, and conducted spin operation. After two more loads, the unit stopped at some place in 3rd cycle and F02 code was again rendered on the display. Called for repair and technician indicated F-02 code also caused by incorrect laundry detergent and excessive foaming [which I have always understood the user would be alerted to this by the "SUD" alert code lighting up the display; but, this has never occurred on this machine]. Recent household changes include a newborn / infant which resulted in errant use of non-HE Dreft laundry detergent for the baby clothes. We ran the cleaning cycle with chlorine bleach three times; then, proceeded with laundry as usual...and began using the HE version of Dreft for the baby items. Also began using less of the Tide HE detergent that has been used since equipment was new at the suggestion of the service technician who indicated the 2X, 4X, etc., was an indication of an even higher concentration and that using a lesser amount [e.g., 1/2 of the stated amount on the container for 2X, 1/4 of the stated amount on the laundry detergent container for 4X, etc.] would help reduce foaming/excessive suds that may be causing the F-02 error code to show up. After two days, we experienced the same phenomenon again and have cycled between cleaning cycle and laundry cycles ever 2-3 loads sporadically for two days. Have reinspected and cleaned the coin trap/filter [although there was nothing in it], have unplugged the washing machine and let it set for two hours before plugging it back into the electrical outlet, and then cleaned the washing machine three times in a row using the approved method described in the Owner's Manual and also in literature available in this forum. The washer is still behaving erratically and exhibits the F-02 code when it stops operating as previously described. What should I actually be doing to resolve this problem that the corrective actions taken to date have not?

As indicated in the last post, replacing the pump doesn't seem to make sense, given the other discussion provided. Seek a second opinion.

  • bigmdguy May 16, 2010

If machine drain path is checked clear, filter checked clean, bleach cleaning procedure performed after every 2 wash cycles, & the washing machine works fine...but, when no bleaching procedure is performed at this accelerated periodicity and the unit eventually stops just prior to FINAL drain & spin dry process of the wash cycle, identifying the pump as the faulty mechanism in the process simply defies logic. Request further assistance and opinion from other experts in the field. Do NOT need a cut-and-paste of similar troubleshooting guidance already received...technical input based on years of experience is preferred medium.

I appreciate having all of the troubleshooting 'tools' at my fingertips so i can personally assess each step and determine the correct path to take to affect a repair.

This is what I have for that error message:

Press PAUSE/CANCEL twice to clear the display. If the error repeats:

* Check the drain hose and make sure it is not plugged or kinked.
* Check the electrical connections at the pump and make sure the pump is running.
* Check the drain pump filter for foreign objects.
* If the above does not correct the problem, replace the pump.

You can see what the pump looks like on the Duet front-load washer at the following link:

LINK > http://www.appliance411.com/data.php?rc=903698

Such an error can also be caused if using the wrong detergent which can create sudsing. Only HE detergent should be used and usually only about 2 tablespoons, 1/4 cup at the very most.

Above is a service manual for your exact make and model, above that is a DIY troubleshooting site, above that is a site that addresses that machine directly. I am sure if you work through the links and troubleshooting procedures in the Service and repair manual, you will be able to effect a repair on your washer.
Your Error Code F02, is directly addressed above and a repair is mooted for you. However, ensure you go through the troubleshooting procedures to make sure you do not miss anything.

Hi,

Please remove the front/lower panel by removing the screws at the very bottom of the panel. Then look at the the large circular draincock. It has a handle on it and is white. You will need ALOT of towels or a shop-vac standing by because some water will come out during the next step. Turn the handle, remove the drain ****, remove the debris in the filter, check inside the pump where the filter was. You will see the pump impeller towards the right side. Make sure this is also clear. CHECK CAREFULLY.Also check the pump inlet hose as well as you can for socks or other debris. Put the draincock back in, ensuring it is tight, restart the machine while the panel is still off. Watch as the machine runs, check for leaks and if code persists, replace your pump.

As Per the Instructions given by Manufacturer :-

Long Drain
F/02
If the drain time exceeds 8 minutes, the water valves are turned off
flashed.
Press PAUSE/CANCEL twice to clear the display.
NOTE: After 4 minutes the "Sud" error will be displayed, then
the F/02 error code
will be displayed.
Potential Causes

* Check the drain hose
and make sure it is not plugged or kinked

* Check the electrical connections at the pump and make sure th

running.

* Check the drain pump filter for foreign objects

•If the above does not correct the problem replace the pump

The fix.:

Start by removing the two screws at the bottom front of the unit. There is one on each side of the lower front panel.

Inside you will see the pump assembly. It is a white plastic unit right in the front center of the machine.. There is a round plug that has a plastic tab all the way across the front of it. Twist it to the left (cc) and remove it. This is the coin trap, and it is probably going to be clogged.

NOTE: have plenty of old towels available it is going to be messy.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. F/02 error means Long Drain. If the drain time exceeds 8 minutes, the water valves are turned off and "F/02" is flashed. Press PAUSE/CANCEL twice to clear the display.

  • Check the drain hose and make sure it is not plugged or kinked.
  • Check the electrical connections at the pump and make sure the pump is running.
  • Check the drain pump filter for foreign objects.
  • If the above does not correct the problem, replace the pump.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks

All of the corrective actions you provided have been conducted with exception of the replacing the pump. The technician who has been here twice has checked the pump and indicated it does not need to be replaced. I do not understand how the pump can operate through the entire wash cycle one time then, just prior to the final drain & spin cycle in the next load [same exact settings], it blows an F-02 code and stops operating. Once wet clothing is removed, cycle reset as you described, water can then be drained from the tub and the machine then set to rinse and spin again and it does it fine...once. It appears that only if a bleach cleaning cycle is performed can a load of laundry be processed from beginning to end without blowing a code and the cycle stops again before reaching it's normal conclusion. I cannot see how a worn impeller or wearing ring can cause intermittent operation as I've described -- is it possible that there may be a faulty sensor?? Please advise --

As I said earlier that if still the issue is not resolved then replacing the pump is only option as its not related to anything else. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

    Thanks

SOURCE: Error Msg F02

BIG THANK YOU to Colonel Rick, the solution worked perfectly... I did find one improvement... before you pull the filter out... if you have a vacuum which works as a wet vac (I have a Rainbo knock-off called a Hyla) pull all the water out of the tub (you may have to empty your vac one or more times) and then have it ready (basin empty, machine running, hose in one hand) when you pull the filter... minimum muss and fuss, and a very happy crew when the machine is "up and running" in no time, sans ridiculous service call charge and multi-day wait!!!

Our washing machine will not drain, and keeps bringing up "LD" error code. It keeps beeping and the timer isn't going down.

  1. residential washer displays error codes. Though designed to indicate the nature of the error, to anyone without a copy of a washer manual handy, the codes might as well be Martian cryptography. Luckily, the Manage My Life website has partnered with Kenmore and made manuals for each make and model of Kenmore washer available online. The error codes are differentiated between top and front-loading machines.
  2. FH Error Code
  3. When a front-loading Kenmore residential washer displays the "FH" error code, the machine is experiencing a water-inlet problem. A water-inlet problem is the result of the washer receiving too little water to operate. The Kenmore owner's manual suggests five home remedies for this problem: Check that the water faucets connected to the washer are turned on; that the inlet screens in the washer's connection hose are not clogged; that the hose is not kinked; and that the hose is not frozen. If none of these problems are present, turn off the washer, unplug it, plug it back in, and restart the machine.
  4. FL Error Code
  5. The "FL" error code on a top-loading Kenmore residential washer indicates that the machine has over filled. When a residential Kenmore washer is overfull, it will beep every 10 seconds. The pump will cycle on and off every 30 seconds in an attempt to rectify the problem. To stop the pump or restart the machine, either disengage and then re-engage the power source to the washer, or push the overfill reset switch. If water continues to enter the machines after the "FL" error has appeared, shut off the inlet flow faucet or the machine will overflow.
  6. F02 Error Code
  7. The "F02" error code on a front-loading Kenmore residential washer indicates that the machine is experiencing a drainage problem. Home-remedy solutions for this error code, as suggested by the Kenmore manual, are similar to those for the "FH" error code: Insure that the drainage hose is not kinked, frozen, or clogged. If none of these problems are present, check that the hose is less than 96 inches, or 8 feet, above the floor. A hose more than eight feel from the floor will not drain properly

HF error flashes, then after 7 min. drains machine, but won,t go in wash cycle

Kenmore HE3T front loading washing machine. About every 2 minutes the cycle stops and flashes an "f" then an "h" on the display over and over again. **

That error code can be the result of no water detected entering machine after 30 seconds or pressure switch (water level control) activation not detected after 8 minutes of filling.

If there is no water in the machine at the time, make sure that both water taps are turned on, check for kinked fill hoses or plugged sediment screens in them and verify the water fill valve operation.

If there is water in the unit, verify drain pump and water pressure switch are operating properly, the pressure switch hose is in good condition and properly connected to the pressure switch. Also, make sure the water is not siphoning out of the machine prematurely due to an improperly installed drain hose

That error might also be caused by too much suds in the wash water like can result from using non-HE detergents

My front loading Kenmore is stopping in the middle of its cycle.

"F21" is a Long Drain error. If the drain time exceeds 8 minutes this error code will be displayed. In addition, a "SUDS" error may also be displayed. This may be an indication of a drain pump problem and/or clog in the drain line. You will need to check the following:

1.First, attempt to unplug the washer for at LEAST 30 minutes to reset the Central Control Unit (CCU). Sometimes this is all that is required to correct momentary glitches with the unit. If the error code returns, proceed to step 2.
2.Check the drain hose to make sure it is not kinked or clogged.
3.Check the electrical connections to the pump and ensure the pump is running.
4.Remove the drain pump filter and check for foreign objects and/or debris.

If the above procedures do not correct the problem, it is recommended by the manufacturer to replace the drain pump.
