I have a used Garmin nuvi 650 that I just purchased and I downloaded updates from the garmin website. The touchscreen is frozen--I have pushed the reset button but that does not help.

  • casbishop May 15, 2010

I do not understand why I would go to the tom tom.com site to do downloads for a garmin gps? I went to the website and found nothing that would help with a garmin nuvi 650. Can I get rid of the updated downloads or is that not part of the problem? Could this gps have been having troubles freezing up before?

Hi,
This is a common problem with units having the serial numbers beginning with "14V", "12P" and "143". It's caused by a defective SHARP touchscreen and needs to be replaced. Please see this link for more info:

Thanks

Hi, you may need a new touchscreen, but to make sure it is not a software problem, do this: The software on your gps system may be corrupted and unreadable. You will need to update it/re-install the software on it. To do that, you can download this software which will automatically search for the latest updates: http://www.tomtom.com/services/service.php?id=16&tab=87
If that does not work, you need to get the touchscreen to be replaced.

Take care

Try to install again the software updates, because the problem occurs after this operation. But the software updates source was coming from a reliable source?

  • casbishop May 15, 2010

It says that there are no available software updates. That all updates have been completed. I did this through www.garmin.com

I cannot get it to reload because it says that all software updates are completed. I did the download through the garmin website.

No signal how do I fix it

You have not said what model garmin nuvi ?
The touchscreen on a Garmin nuvi GPS usually loses sensitivity or stops responding if it's lost calibration.
This usually happens after prolonged usage.
Touchscreen problems are also caused by dirt, smudges and improper care.
If your Garmin nuvi's screen isn't performing as expected, Garmin provides solutions and tips to not only improve the device's performance, but prevent premature wear and tear.
Calibrating the Screen

If the Garmin nuvi's touchscreen isn't working, you need to calibrate the screen.
Calibration resets and repositions the screen for optimal performance without deleting saved settings.
Before calibrating the screen, press and hold the "Power" button to turn off the device.
Pressing and holding the "Power" button again for about 30 seconds automatically displays the calibration screen.
Pressing the dot on the white screen calibrates the touchscreen automatically.

Updating Software.
If The Garmin nuvi's touchscreen is still unresponsive, updating the device's firmware to the latest version can solve operating system problems that lead to touchscreen problems.
Before updating the device's firmware, connect the GPS to the computer using the USB cable. When the computer detects the GPS, the "AutoPlay" menu appears on the screen.
Tapping the arrow on the menu automatically opens the "myGarmin Agent" download page.
From there, follow the prompts to update your Garmin nuvi's software quickly and safely.

Cleaning. In some cases, the Garmin nuvi's touchscreen won't respond to touch if the screen is dirty. Touchscreens are sensitive to dirt and smudges that decrease sensitivity.
If the screen is dirty, cleaning it with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth improves performance.
If the screen is severely dirty, using water, isopropyl alcohol or eyeglass cleaner removes tough stains.
To avoid damaging the screen, apply liquid to a cloth instead of directly to the touchscreen before cleaning it.

Tips.

Refer to your Garmin nuvi's maintenance and storage information found on the device's manual prevents premature wear and tear.
If the screen stopped working after prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures or water, the device's hardware is most likely damaged.
In such a case, you need to contact Garmin for additional troubleshooting and possible repairs.
Attempting to disassemble and repair the GPS yourself only increases the risk of damaging the unit even further.
also it could be a battery problem if the nuvi is not getting power ?

Garmin 1450t stuck in loader loading error after downloading maps

Please follow the instructions below to remove the "Loader Loading" message from the unit.

To fix this problem on Windows:
  1. With the nuvi powered off, press and hold the upper left hand corner of the touchscreen with your finger
  2. Continue to hold the touchscreen while pressing and releasing the power button on the device. The Garmin Logo should display
  3. Continue to hold the touchscreen while connecting the device to your computer
  4. After 30 seconds, the screen should flash white. At this point, release the touchscreen. A green progress bar should display on the device. After the progress bar completes (45-60 seconds), the device should go into Mass Storage mode
  5. Open the nuvi drive that appears in My Computer or Computer
  6. Locate the Voice folder and delete the extra Voice files that are not needed
  7. Type ".System" (without quotations) after the nuvi's letter in the address bar

System comes up ok but does not respond to touchscreen

I own a Garmin so I am very familiar with them. The touch screen itself and the software in your unit work in conjunction with each other. I would first go to Garmins website, hook up your unit to your computer and down load any updates they may have for your unit then try your unit again. If it still doesn't work then your probably going to need to contact Garmin to see if they can repair it. If the updates don't work for you then I would think its the touch screen itself that may need replacement.

I hope this helps you out.

Non-responsive touchscreen, cursor flashes top left will not allow to input pin code, loads maps and all buy no touch screen function, also did reset on back a few times nothing. Ken

I have a non-working Nuvi 650 with same problem. Garmin tech support says they do not support the Nuvi 650 and I will have to buy another one. My Garmin was only 2 years old when it failed.
I doubt I will be buying another Garmin.

My Nuvi 650 touch screen stopped working. Also my computer will not recognise the device. Doesn't show as a drive. I updated the software yesterday.

If you have a PIN assigned, you must enter the PIN before the GPS will get to the routine where it will communicate with the PC. Of course if the touchscreen has failed, you will not be able to enter the PIN.

Touchscreen failure is a common problem. Please see this link for more information:
