Question about HP Photosmart R717 Digital Camera
The motorized lens on my HP Photosmart R717 is permanently stuck, with about 1/4 inch of it sticking out of the camera body. I don't remember dropping it and when I turn on the power switch it sounds as if the lens wants to come out but it barely moves and the power turns itself off after about 4 seconds.
I have tried it both on battery power and plugged into the wall with the same results.
Any suggestions, anyone? Thanks....

SOURCE: Camera locked up
I had exactly the same problem. It seems it can happen if the camera tries to open the lens when inside the case. The solution in my case was to grab the outermost metal ring of the lens and twist it clockwise (gently but with enough force). I heard a snap sound as the lens clicks into place and after this the camera started working.

Try taking the SD card out and restart the camera. Also, make sure the batteries are fully charged. There is also a firmware upgrade indicating a problem with the lens getting stuck.

This is probably THE most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
