Question about Music

What value is R76 on the Boss DD-20 GigaDelay pedal. Pedal doesn't power up and I am pretty sure this is the culprit as it measures direct short circuit and hence puts positive supply direct to ground. Thanks for any help. Kenda47

More analysis is needed!!!

I have 50 years of electronics troubleshooting and I use the experience to isolate bad parts. I will tell you that resistors USUALLY open circuit 99.99% of the time and very very rarely do they short... I maybe have seen one do that in the last 50 years.

Most common shorts are semiconductors and electrolytic caps with other types of caps and diodes pulling up the rear.

The way you troubleshoot this is to use a current limited power supply OR put a resistor in series with a supply of correct voltage and DRIVE some current into the short... keep it around 500 ma.

Next do the finger test lookig for WARM parts.

Next use a sensitive milli-voltmeter to trace where the voltage goes to ground. The circuit traces have resistance and you can follow the current by following the voltage drop till you find the lowest voltage and you will find your bad part.

Pedal plays10 minutes then cuts off

Sounds like bad power. Just checking to make sure the voltage on the power supply matches is not enough. You need to make sure that the miliamps match AND that the polarity is correct. I had the same issue with my old DD-20.

DId you remove the plug from the input jack to turn the pedal off? If so then you may have a bad input jack.

My boss DD-3 makes a strange tapping sound on all modes. tapping sound gets more frequent when i turn the delay time pot to the right. its like a little tap sound getting into the circuit with the guitar...

Check your power source or battery. The sound is probably due to the internal processor recycling due to watchdog timer. If power is OK, then service will be necessary to repair the problem.

My Boss Digital delay pedal won't stay on unless I keep my foot on it.

This is likely a failing switch under the pedal. Either the toggling mechanism is broken in it or if it is a momentary type it probably has "contact bounce" that exceeds the what the de-bounce circuitry can handle.

My DD3 pedal doesn't work. Checked the battery and the adapter. The light won't go on it will only light momentarily when I click through the modes. Any help would be appreciated. Greg

Check all connections including the battery clip if you use a battery, and the adapter jack if you use the AC adapter. Also check you guitar cable connections as the pedal turns itself off if the guitar plugs have a loose connection. Make sure the guitar jacks on the sides are tight and don't need tightening. Any of those issues could cause the pedal to operate sporadically or not at all.
It could also be and IC problem internally on the pedal's circuit board, but before you open anything, check all the connections non electrical issues can occur more often on pedals.

Find a local handyman, preferably one with electronics skills as well. Sounds like you need one that knows adhesives... DO NOT use super glue for any of this repair... it is too brittle and will soon break again.

Use epoxy for broken parts... JB Weld is pretty good.

My Boss DD3 just beeps and nothing else when i turn it on

If you have experience with electronics you could take it apart and use a multimeter. My guess would be one of the delay chips but its something hard to diagnose without taking it apart. An audio tech could help you out. Chances are it would be a pretty cheap fix. Unfortunately Boss pedals are almost entirely surface mount so replacing a component or two takes more skill than the average pedal.

My boss dd-3 pedal only works with a 9v battery. When I hook it up to the 9v apaptor, (a boss) it freaks out and does nothing. Can you help? Everything seems solid. the jack doesn't wiggle or anything.

You will have to test the adapter with a volt ohm meter to make sure it is putting out the proper voltage. It should be as close to 9 volts as possible. Also make sure that thehole in the plug is negative and the outside is positive. Is it the right adapter? I don't have a schematic for this model but has one for a DD-2. Hopefully they haven't changed too much. If you decide to repair it yourself, check the adapter first then check for a bad solder joint where the adapter plug is soldered to the circuit board. Hope this helps somewhat.

Boss digital delay pedal DD-3 won't stay on

I have seen a somewhat similar problem before. A switching diode had become faulty and needed replacement. I have no way of telling you where to look but if you have a volt ohm meter you can test them individually without removing them. The diode you are looking for would be in the circuit which connects to the switch. Use your probes to get a reading in one direction(one probe on each end of the diode) and then a reading with the probes reversed. If the readings are close or infinite in both directions you will want to unsolder the diode (making careful note of its orientation) and test it again. If the readings are still the same or close you will need to replace the diode. I forgot to mention to use the 2000 ohms resistance scale or the diode test function if you have one. Hope this helps.
