Restoring from archived previous system (Mac 10.5.1)

Tried to archive and install from install dvd and came back with a new system desktop and now cant get previous system info back.

Did you use Time Machine or Disk Utility to backup your system?

    I have a previous system in the HD on my new desktop and when I trie to double click it goes to the dock and bounces but goes away. If I drag it
    to the desktop it trie to copy butthen runs out of space. I have dumped
    the caches and receipts but still not enough space

I would try starting the machine up in single user mode you do this by booting your machine up and then immediately press and hold the command (Apple) key and the s key. If you do not know how to reboot press down the command-control-power key at the same time.

Once you get white text appearing on a black background at the command line prompt type /sbin/fsck -fy then press return. The machine will then go through some testing and then hopefully it will tell you that your hard drive is okay. If it says that the file system has been modified run the comand again i.e. /sbin/fsck -fy When the fsck command reports that your hard drive is okay type reboot at the prompt and then press return. Hopefully your computer will boot up okay after this.

Don't worry just follow the below steps and you will be able to fix your problem

Back up your information to an external medium such as an external hard drive or a flash drive. The install process allows you to transfer current files to a fresh operating system (OS) install, but it is always best to be prepared with a backup of your files in case something goes wrong.

Insert the first install CD or DVD of the operating system software.

Restart your Mac Book or Mac Book Pro. Immediately hold down the "C" key as the computer reboots. This will cause your Mac Book to boot from the CD or DVD you inserted.

See the "Welcome" dialog that asks you to pick a language. It may also ask you to agree to the terms and conditions of the software install. Depending upon which OS version you are using, you might see the software perform several checks on your system. If you do not see this, do not worry.

Choose where to install the OS. You're most likely going to select your primary hard drive. If you have one or more partitions on your hard drive, you can select any of them as long as they are large enough.

Choose your install. You'll be presented with three options: "Upgrade," "Archive and Install," and "Erase and Install."
Choose "Update" to simply update the current OS install on your Mac Book. All your data, files and programs will remain intact.
Choose "Archive and Install" if you need to back up all the data on your system and import it into a fresh install of the software. You will need to reinstall much of your non-Apple software if you choose this option.

When you used the archive and install feature on the installation did you remember to preserve users. If you did not, all you have done is archived the system which will show up as a folder called "Previous System" and none of your files. What I would do is have a look in the users directory the top level of your hard drive and see if there is an archive folder or disk image in there.

My screen is blank with a folder in the middle


This is an icon indicating that the iBook G4 cannot locate the bootable Mac OS X volume on the hard drive.

Here is a procedure you can use in order to get back to your main desktop:

I am going to have you take your Mac into Safe Mode to see if we can't remove a possible folder(s) that may be affecting your Mac's start up function.

Try these steps:


-SAFE BOOT MODE-
• Reboot your Mac
• Upon restarting your Mac, press the Shift key.
• Hold the Shift key until you see a White Screen with Gray Apple icon and eventually a spinning gear.
• When you see the Spinning gear, release the Shift key.
• Allow the Mac to continue booting up. Also this may take a little while
(NOTE: this may take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes to load to the Safe mode screen depending on the performance of your Mac, but if it exceeds this time, shutdown your Mac and try just once more. It may have just frozen up the first time around for you.)

• You are going to enter the Safe Mode (which looks like your main desktop environment - the only difference is certain startup items are disabled.)

• Once within the Desktop in Safe Mode
• From the Finder Menu, click Go> Go to Folder
• Type in this line: /System/Library/StartupItems
• This path, is going to take you to the System Library folder which has all of your Mac OS X Startupitems.
• Remove all of those folders to the Trash.

*Reboot your Mac normally and see if you can access your normal User desktop environment.

If this does not work, it could mean the Mac OS X directory on your iBook G4 may be damaged or corrupted. So the best step you can take to try to correct this without losing any data from your Home Folder(s) is to run an Archive and Install, with your Mac OS X installation disc.

What this process consists of (using your Mac OS X install disc),is removing the damaged or corrupted Mac OS X directory and replacing it with a brand new directory.

This procedure also allows you to save your applications, files and folders without the old directory no longer in the way of interfering with you accessing those files.

-ARCHIVE AND INSTALL-

• Start up from your Mac OS X Install Disc 1 or Install DVD. Please remember to use the install disc that matches the current operating system your system haves.

Usually, you can start from the disc by putting it in your computer, restarting, and holding the C key.
• Hold the C key until you see a White screen, with a Gray Apple icon and eventually a Spinning gear.
• Release the C key only after you see the Spinning gear.

-Your mac will now boot from the disc and load into the Installer environment.

• Select your language. The Welcome to the Mac OS X
Installer window appears.
• Click Continue. The Important Information window appears.
• Follow the prompts until you get to the licensing agreement screen
• An agreement sheet appears. If you agree with
the license agreement, click Agree. Then Select a
Destination window appears.
• Click the volume that you wish to install to (your primary
hard drive).
• Click Options. The installation options sheet appears.
• Select Archive and Install.
• Select the volume which already has Mac OS X installed.
• You should also select Preserve Users and Network
Settings, to preserve network and Home directory
settings.
• Click OK.
• Click Continue to begin the installation.
• Once the Archive and Install is completed, when you reach your desktop be
sure to run all Software updates to bring your new
Mac OS X directory back
up to current.

Also, if you look inside your Macintosh HD icon on your Desktop, look for a folder entitled "Previous System Folder" which will have all of your previous Home folder files prior to the Archive and Install.

Hard disk crashed on macbook


You can tell if your hard drive for your Macbook Pro has really crashed, if you attempt to run these 3 diagnose and repair procedures and there is no response from the hard drive:

1st Procedure:

Start up your computer in Single-User Mode to reach the command line by doing this:
•Make sure your Mac is shutdown.
• Reboot your Mac
• When Mac starts up, press the Apple Command key+ S Key
- A black screen, with white text appears
• At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
• Press Return.
--fsck will run through a series of tests and will return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. When completed, it will display this message if no issue is found:

The volume (name_of_your_Mac_volume) appears to be OK

If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message: --FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED--

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed at the beginning, until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).

• When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
• This last command after completing the fsck process, is going to attempt to boot your Mac to the main desktop.

If unable to reach your Desktop with the fsck procedure, go to the next step.

Procedure # 2

-RUN DISK UTILITY WITH STARTUP DISK-

Insert your Mac OS X Startup disk
•Reboot your Mac
•At the Apple Chime, press the C key and hold it until you see a White screen, gray Apple and eventually a Spinning gear.
• Release the C key only after you see the Spinning gear.
•Mac will boot from the startup disk to the Installer environment
• From the Installer Menu bar, click Utilities > Disk Utility and open up Disk Utility application.
• Click on on the hard drive at the top of the window in the left sidebar and
• Select "Repair Disk"
**Let Disk Utilities run this repair the disk until completion
• At the end of this process, reboot your Mac

* If you have still not gotten a successful boot to your main desktop, try this final step.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Procedure # 3
My recommendation for this issue, is that you use the Archive and Install procedure to resolve this issue.

What this process consists of (using your Mac OS X install disc),is removing the damaged or corrupted Mac OS X directory and replacing it with a brand new directory.

This procedure also allows you to save your applications, files and folders without the old directory interferring with you then accessing those files.

-ARCHIVE AND INSTALL-

• Start up from your Mac OS X Install Disc 1 or Install DVD. Please remember to use the install disc that matches the current operating system your system haves.

If there is still no responsiveness of the hard drive after this last procedure, your best option would be to take your Macbook Pro in for repair or replacement of the hard drive, to your local Apple retail store Genius bar or local Apple authorized service center.

Computer has power but will not start up...wheel is spinning but desktop not coming up.


Hi Allen
Try starting up holding down the shift key - keep holding as it may take some time (if you get to 10 minutes though I would give up).
If it starts up OK let it run for a few minutes then shut it down completely and do a normal start. Does it still start?
If not, Start it up from your system DVD and run disk utility - repair drive.
Try starting normally again.
If it still doesn't work you may have to reistall. Don't erase, just do an archive and install and then see what happens.

The dock went missing from the screen


It sounds like something went wrong with the install. the Archives option, saves your current system folder and makes another one. After you restore there should be a folder named "previous operating systems" or something like that.

I don't think there is a way around it.

My son dragged the main operation systen icon into the trash ,


The screen telling you to reset the computer is called a kernel panic, this is what happens when the computer knows something - either software or hardware is wrong with it,but it doesn't know exactly what. I would recommend you use the restore dvd that came with the computer,boot from it by holding C while you turn on the computer, and do an "Archive and install" to get the operating system back up and running, this will not delete any of your info as long as you choose the archive and install under options during the install.

Mac OS X Blue Screen


You might need to do an Archive and Install installation, this will transfer your existing Mac OS X system files to a folder named Previous System, and then it will install a new copy of Mac OS X on the volume you have selected.
