I have a Kenmore electric model 86873100 dryer the cycle timer knob does not advance and will not shut off due to not being able to advance, what's the best course of action to remedy the issue ?

Well... Your model number appears to be off, a bit. It should start with something like, 110.86873100...

Is this problem occurring in Timed dry, sensor dry, or all modes?

Before buying a new timer, I'd first look at the resistor that feeds voltage back to the timer motor. Make sure it's not open. Also, check to make sure one of the wires didn't fall off of it or burn up.

Also, if this was a Kenmore made by GE, they have two coils in them. If one of the coils burns out, but not the other, the timer will not advance. You'll know it's this type if you have a big, round coil setup right behind your drum.

Good luck!

Kenmore 68731 model 86873100 setting the drying to any of the drying methods, the dial does not move to automatically turn off the dryer.

You have a bad timer motor To verify you will get an ohm meter and remove the wires to the motor.

Check between the motor wires fer continuity. If you have continuity then the next test will verify if the gears are stripped on the motor. Apply power to the timer motor and see if it advances on its own. From looking at your model number I see nothing unusual about the timer.
to get to the[parts list I did 110.36873100. 110 is a the large prefix which ID's the dryer as being a whirlpool model. All kenmores ain't Whirlpool.

My kenmore dryer model 86873100 will not heat

gas or electric? if it runs, check the heating element for a break. make sure the dryer venting is cleaned or the safety on the heater element will shut off the heat to prevent a fire. you may also need a thermal cut out kit which is mounted on the heater assembly.

If still heating, clean out vent and check for kinks. Also, REMOVE PLUG FIRST!! Remove back and remove four screw holding filter duct assembly at bottom left. Pull duct toward rear and reach into bottom of duct and remove lint. Also, wash out filter screen.
