I have a packard bell laptop and i want to use alt codes, but furst i have to enable Num Lock. The problem is there isnt such a key on the keyboard.

The ALT codes can be entered on the number pad with or without NUMLOCK on. On a laptop, if there is a separate number pad then there is usually a button marked NUMLK or similar. On smaller laptops the number pad is shared with other buttons and there will be a 2nd FUNC or similar button to allow the buttons to operate as a number pad.

How do i activate the 1/4 on the number keys. I shift to get the $-& etc. but what do I do to activate the other options offered on the number keys?

there are special characters you can use for those. this webpage tells you all of them. its for a normal keyboard with the number pad on the side so on a your laptop there should be blue numbers on some of your letters, so you hold the fn key + alt and do the numbers it tells you from the webpage. remember, you have to use the blue numbers that are on the letters, the ones across the top wont work

Number pad

You can't make the alternate characters like °, ®, ♂, σ etc with a combination number pad. You need to have a seperate number pad. I use a $20 plug in keyboard.

Keyboard letters coming in to numbers

Generic comments

Are you using a lap top? If so ... the is a probability you have the num lock on which turns certain keys into numbers (they have little blue numbers on the keys) so you can use the "key pad" in the middle of your keyboard. Press the Fn (probably blue too) and num to turn this off.

If you are on a desk top ... you are going to have to look in the help section of your software for an answer to this problem'

Sorry, I tried :-)

If you press the Fn and Num Lock at exactly the same time, it usually won't work. Hold down Fn key first, then press Num kock. See if that works.
