Five common causes:-

1. The dishwasher hasn't got any salt in, or the salt dispenser control is set too low. Even if your tablets/powder have a salt function, it's often not enough in hard water areas and supplementary salt must be added to the salt dispenser.

2. There is no rinse aid in the machine or the dispenser control is set too low. Supplementary rinse aid may be needed even with tablets/powder which claim to include it.

3. The dishwasher is not reaching the correct operating temperature. This can be due to a faulty machine, or by using low temperature washes inappropriately. Low temperature washes are only suited to very lightly soiled loads which have not baked/dried on. There ARE special low temperature tablets/powders, but they're designed only for specialised domestic machines with low temperature overnight wash cycles or for commercial dishwashers.

4. The filters/debris traps at the bottom of the machine are not clean.

5. You're using the "wrong" brand tablets/powder. In this instance "wrong" simply means that your machine just doesn't get on with the brand you're currently using. price has little to do with it; I find with my current machine that the market leading expensive brand works poorly but the ultra-cheap supermarket basic value brand works perfectly. Also it can be down to using a genuinely wrong tablet/powder choice as per suggestion #3.

Sorry, there's also an obvious 6th common cause which just boils down to poor stacking or overloading of the machine. Spoons mustn't be nested, pots mustn't have items placed beneath them and the spray arms must be unobstructed and free to rotate when the machine has been loaded and the drawers pushed back in.

100% Correct Obertelli. My wife CONSTANTLY complains about how our "Top of the line" dishwasher doesn't clean worht a darn.... I watched her load it, showed and explained it, she still doesnt do it. When I do it correctly, the dishes come out looking like a bored crack-head came over with some detergent and a toothbrush raided the dishwasher and left!!

I have fridgdere dish washer every time I put the dishes in the washer it comes out foggy and discloured pls reply waht to do.

Clean out any junk in the washer. Then put in some new rinsing agent. That should work.
If it's still a problem, put a cup of vinegar into the bottom of the dishwasher while doing a load of glasses and other light dishes . These should come out sparkling and it may help clean some unseen junk in the washer.

Maytag Quiet Series 100, Model # MDB5600AWS, built in dishwasher. Does not get the dishes clean, dishes stay dirty after multiple cycles of washing. Please help!

We also have a Quiet series 100 and had the same problem, the dishes always came out dingy or with food all over them. My washer is about 5 years old and worked well for about 4 of them but the last year has been doing a poorer and poorer job washing the dishes. I finally broke down and removed the racks and all of the plastic parts from the inside of the washer. Doing this revealed that the groves in the under side of most of the plastic parts was clogged with food and debris. After a good scrubbing with water and a brush then reassembly it worked like a new washer again, cleaning the dishes very well and the best part is it saved us about $700.00 for another washer.

GE PDW9700 - The dishes do not get cleaned

Same as above problem: I have had this dishwasher for less than 4 years and the dishes as of about 2 years ago stopped getting cleaned. I use the recommended dish liquid and rinse and lightly clean the dishes before I put them in.

I have a kenmore elite dishwashe and it isn't or is almost a year old. yesterday i did a load of dishes and it didn't clean them....at all. so i put a differant detergent in the washer and heard it fill...

when you say they are not clean do you mean they have a white film on them? if so it is your water actually and not your dishwasher. there is a product designed specifically for this problem. it filters the water going into your dishwasher. www.dishwasherfilter.com is where you can get it and it is affordable and works great.

Not cleaning at all - most dishes end up being washed by hand afterwards

Hi there!

You've done the basics, so we'll treat it as a fault due to wear.

When running, do you hear the spray arms rotating - about twice a second?

If the water is actually reaching the dishes, bur the arms are not rotating, you may need replacement spray arms.

If the water is not even reaching the dishes with any force, The circulation pump may be faulty and needs replacement.

Hope this helps you.

Dishes are not coming out fully clean

first if the pump is running and you can hear it washing it should clean now hot water cleans dishes not the washer the hotter the better at least 130-135 degrees modern dish washers use less water than older models so if you don't get the water as hot as you can stand it at the sink before you turn the washer on you can fill it with cold water second its important that you use jet dry and if your dishes aren't dry at the end of the cycle then on most washers you can turn the disp up for more hope that helps let me know

Wont clean dishes

Check to see if the Upper and lower spin arms rotate easy .. check to see if there is anything blocking them.. also check the venturi assembly (the tower is in the center of the lower spray arm} As it is what supplies the upper spay arm. let me know if this helps?
