Question--Are you getting a "click" out of the solenoid when you turn the key? Can you take a jumper cable and go around the solenoid and turn the engine?

What year and make is it? Your relay is usually drivers side under the hood. But, it could be under the dash. Its in a box similar to a fuse panel and may actually be in with fuses.are you getting any noise? Are other accessories like radio working?

Where is fusiable link in a 2001 jeep grand cherokee

4.0L or 4.7L engine> the park switches are different.

you pulled a starter with out removing battery neg lug?
is that it?
your post makes it hard to see what the story is.
you replaced starter because car would not CRANK
or
you replaced starter, and shorted out the big cable and boom
and now all things are dead. what?
ill assume car would not crank one day
and you gue$$ a bunch of parts and guessed wrong,
guessing is very expensive.
------------------------------Testing wins--------------------------------------
so no crank 101, posted 100 times. ILL ASSUME it's a A/T tranny.
(im ignoring new parts, i never assume anything works i test it)

  1. check all fuses in all boxes. using a voltmeter. 12vdc both sides key on and battery cables lugs area all clean and tight x4 ends.
  2. you check battery volts its 12.6vdc rested, good.
  3. you crank, and the solenoid just clicks. or only the starter relay only clicks, (more later on that)
  4. you see that battery voltage never drops below 11v and crank time. (11v is typ, tad less if in Alaska, or bad battery or not charged fully)
  5. You then jumper cable crank car, off a running donor car ,just like Mr. AAA tow does.... same to a fault. (google how) (hinting your battery is good, I have a battery load tester so can check)
  6. if this cranks ok, the battery is bad. (happens or is discharged)
  7. car still will not jumper crank.
  8. we next hot wire the starter small wire to big lug. keys in pocket. Called hot wiring a starter solenoid.
  9. engine does not crank, starter bad. or may be battery cables.
  10. engine does crank nice , my keys are in pocket ,see?
  11. ok starter is good, at test 10. so we now know its ok. easy huh>
  12. now we know the key line is bad. 1 wire. end to end. easy.
  13. you try to start in neutral, omg it starts. bad PRNDL switch.
  14. or its bad starter relay.

now we show how it cranks. good starter and battery (& cables)
keyon,
put shifter in to park then neutral and crank.? fails both?

the starter relay must close cranked, if not, bad park switch or bad relay
in this moment (cranking) there must be 12vdc across the 2 relay coil pins.
pin 85 and 86 with volt meter, if 0v, the PRNDL switch is bad.
or on 4.7L the TRS switch.
if the relay closes, then jb fuse f31 is ok and pdc f8 must be good.
and you then turn key to crank. and relay pin 87 goes to 11v to 12v.
this then is a single wire that goes directly to the starter solenoid
tiny wire , it goes to 12v and starter cranks, 11v what you see here
unless in alaska , less. (10v ?)

see red arrow what is voltage there cranking?
we can go fast , if you just do that.

25513501-qtmfudt4eg5vdkejwfy5ompz-5-0.jpg the transmission switch grounds the lower coil, here.
if not the starter will be dead forever.
both fuses must be good, or same.
12vdc arrives at top left fuse, and is hot only cranking.
if the right fuse, glows above the relay can not send power to the starter solenoid.

2002 chev impala will not start, will not crank over and lights will go out when i try and start it

Have the battery tested if no good replace. Check for power at the starter cable and then while someone holds the key in the crank position check for power at the trigger wire of the starter. If you have power but no crank or click then you may have a bid starter or the engine is seized. If no power on the tarter little wire which comes from the ignition switch make sure you fuses and relay is good and that your ignition switch is working. If the battery tests good have your alternator checked as well. The cluster may act erratic if battery is low or bad.

1993 Toyota Camry - No electricity reaches the starter when I turn the ignition key on.

A/T or M/T ?????? Auto or STICK>? shift.????????
for sure , all elect, problems always check all fuses first in both boxes. (endless posts that.)
and endless 2, clean the battery lugs and check battery voltage
12.6vdc rested is a good battery.

it can be many things not just those.
do you want to guess, or tests... ill skip the former.
NO CRANK, is the problem.

1: so does Jumper cable starters work<
yes, battery is bad or discharged, (bad battery or charge system failure)
no, the jumper test failed,
so what to do next, (i use meters)
but
A: I hot wire the solenoid, big lug to dinky lug. all keys in pocket....!@!!!
it cranks great
that means the starter is good, and the key line is dead.
it dont crank, bad starter. (or seized engine?) hand turn engine, ok, its ok.
ok the key line is bad.
so why is it, until you tell what transmission in car ?????
1: M/T clutch switch bad/
2: A/T the PRNDL switch is bad.

see tricks at end, the magic.
http://www.fixkick.com/nocrank.html
my posts assume
1: no aftermarket hacks to the starting systems (no remote start bs)
2: no aftermarket alarms. hacked in. removed many .....
3: other hacks gone wild , even audio installers with out a clue.

1996 Toyota tercel doesn't start doesn't crank

Well you may have more than one problem.
As far as cranking, a mechanic would check for voltage at the starter and trace back to the key switch. The key switch could cause both problems. There is also a neutral safety switch that could cause it not to crank.
You could also have a bad ground connection between the engine and body.

Ok so I bought a 94 Chrysler concorde... the guy told me you have to turn the key multiple times before it starts...the starter doesn't kick in until basically it wants to...lol he said the ignition...

You may be right. Sometimes a starter test doesn't reveal everything. But before you pull the starter, do this quick test. It should confirm if problem is the starter or the ignition switch. When the car won't crank over, pull the small wire off the starter solenoid (on the starter), and check if it has power when key is held in crank position. You need a helper to hold the key in crank. If the wire has power (use a testlight or meter to check for power), and the starter won't crank, pull the starter off for testing or replacement. But if there is no power on the wire when key is held in crank, then it confirms that power is not being transmitted from the switch to the starter. Not to say for sure it is the switch, could also be another part in the path from switch to solenoid (like the neutral safety switch). But more common for the ignition switch to go out first. Either replace the switch or continue testing your start circuit. Post back with results or for further help. Good luck.

My 1997 dodge caravan won't start. has no power to starter wire or to engine. battery ok stater ok switch ok fuses and relays ok

there is an interrupt switch, called neutral safety switch. When it fails or goes out of adjustment, no start, and essentially no protest or indication. Try foot on brake, shift to neutral, turn key to start and slowly move shifter out of nuetral in each direction. If starter actuates, look into switch adjustment.
