Check in the device manager or control panel to see if any audio devices are installed correctly. If not or if you have a yellow icon by it, then most likely you'll have to do a search for xp driver downloads for your model pc, and download the audio drivers. Install them and reboot. If you still have the yellow icon, you may have to right click and manually update the driver, but only after you download and install it.
There are many reasons this could happen, but this is the most common. And hard to troubleshoot with more information.
Hope this is at least helpful.

Recently got this machine from my daughter who got a new machine. Re formatted hard drive, installed XP, working great, but after about a week, I lost the sound. Any ideas?

1) we will 1st go to device manager and check the drivers
2) check if the mute is checked of unchecked

3) if the driver is not there in device manager then we will go and install the sound drivers from HP.COM

4) we need to check the os if it came with vista of xp
if vista then u have downgraded the os.then it can be the issue with compatablity

5) if it was working after installing xp if sound was there then we can do system recovery

6)
we can do recovery(last option)

try to download belarc advisor software. Run this in your vista OS and send it to me so I can check your hardware specs. This is the only way to avoid problems in the future or before you start the formatting.
