Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

I have a Whirlpool thin twin and the agitator is not spinning and makes a humming noise. I washed a small bathroom rug that created an uneven load and this is when the problem started. We removed the top of the agitator but can't seem to get the middle piece of it off. Any suggestions? Do we have to replace a motor or would it be a belt?

I don't have a solution to this but I have almost the exact same problem - washed a runner bathroom rug last night, today it drains but won't spin and I'm having trouble diagnosing further or disassembling... <!-- from fixya rte -->

This video covered my problem exactly:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLPGs2UMU...

The coupling that you see at 2:45 was broken on mine. I ordered the replacement part (sorry, don't remember the part or vendor at the moment), installed, and I'm back in business.

NOTE: If this is your problem, be careful when installing the new coupling (this is at 3:55 in the video). The new couplings are made with a metal fixing for the direct coupling and a plastic armature. When hammering mine back on, I didn't use a socket the same way you will see in the video and I almost separated the coupling axle fitting from the plastic armature.

Whirlpool Thin Twin randomly skips agitation during the cycle.

Did you ever figure this out? Mine agitates but instead doesn't start spinning and draining unless I open the lid. It then "clicks" and starts but it is strange that I have to do this to get it to spin.

If this is a relatively newer Whirlpool model, it does not use a drive belt. Whirlpool model top loader washers generally use a motor coupling in place of a drive belt and are referred to as "direct-drive" washers. Since you mentioned the washer stopped working while you were washing a rug, you may have broken the motor coupling. The coupler is located between the drive motor and gearcase (transmission) and will wear out with age. Larger loads can put added stress on the coupler and can cause premature wear and tear. The following link explains how to access the motor coupling and replace it, if necessary:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3574231-replacing_a_motor_coupling

The newer version motor couplers are more resilient and resist breaking better than the older ones. The part number is included with the instructions I provided. Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

All these sites are reputable and offer great service with competitive pricing, so shop and compare. The first three sites I listed also include helpful exploded view parts diagrams to assist you in locating and properly identifying the parts you need. If you do not wish to order parts on line, use the part numbers I provided and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer. The coupler is commonly sold as part of their in-store inventory. The average cost of a motor coupling is about $15.

If you have any questions, please post back with your MODEL NUMBER and let me know. I hope this helps you.

Whirlpool direct drive top loader will not spin

Hi, Is the humming noise coming from the timer area? Do you know if it agitates ok?
When you have it in spin cycle, Try lifting the lid and see if the hum stops.
The reason for these questions is that on this model, if it drains the water out but does not spin, it is either lid switch, coupler, or transmission.
If it's the coupler, it will not agitate either.
Please let me know so I can assist you further.

Thanks
Vic

Washer does not spin or agitate

you need to remove the cabinet to expose the washer. once you do that you need to remove the 2 clips that hold the pump to the motor. then remove the 2 1/4 inch screws that hold the 2 clips onto the motor. ( remove the wireing connector first) remove the motor and Im sure you will find that the coupling need to be replaced. There are 3 parts to the coupling. 1 rubber and 2 white plastic parts. replace the coupling and install everything in reverst. your washer should work fine after this.
